While reports have continued to emerge over the past several weeks that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon at UFC 206 in Toronto, with St-Pierre himself promising fans news regarding his return in ‘a few weeks maximum’. Unfortunately however, while St-Pierre was hoping to deliver on his promise of news of his return, shortly after ‘Rush’ gave the interview he then revealed in a separate interview that he had terminated his contract with the UFC, and was now a free agent. Despite that, St-Pierre remained in Las Vegas, with many speculating that St-Pierre remained in Vegas to negotiate with the UFC brass.

The news came just over a week after St-Pierre informed MMA fans that news regarding his potential return to the Octagon would be coming in ‘just a few weeks’. Following St-Pierre’s announcement, the UFC brass was quick to release a statement in which they refuted St-Pierre’s claims of being a free agent. ‘Rush’ has remained in Las Vegas, while reports of his potential return at UFC 206 against Michael Bisping have continued to circulate despite his claims that he is a free agent.

Several key UFC executives were let go, including Chief Global Brand Officer & Head of International Business Development in Vegas, Garry Cook, Chief Content Officer Marshall Zelaznik, UFC Executive VP & GM of UFC Asia Ken Berger, and UFC Executive VP & GM of Canada, Tom Wright to name just a few of the nearly 15% of the worldwide employees let go by the WME-IMG owners. In addition, approximately 80% of the UFC’s Canadian Office was let go.

Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler is coming off a devastating 1st round KO loss to Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC 201 back in August which saw him lose the UFC welterweight championship. Following the loss, it appeared as though Lawler was poised for a quick turnaround when it was announced that he was slated to fight Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at UFC 205 in November, the UFC’s inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden in New York following the legalization of MMA.

St-Pierre, who hasn’t fought since his 2013 split decision win over Johny Hendricks, has maintained that he is ready to make his return to MMA. Despite that, UFC President Dana White has maintained that he believes St-Pierre doesn’t want to fight. In a recent interview, White went as far as to explain that he knows people who want to fight, and Georges St-Pierre isn’t one of them.
