UFC Sacramento has been building up very nicely over the recent weeks and now we know what will likely be its headliner. MMA Junkie has reported that a top contender match-up in the bantamweight division has been verbally agreed to for the July 13 main event between the former UFC featherweight champion, “The Iron Lady,” Germaine de Randamie (8-3) and rising undefeated 24-year old contender, Aspen Ladd (8-0).

The UFC rankings have been updated after an entertaining card last Saturday in Denver, Colorado. Following one of the best knockouts in UFC history, Yair Rodriguez jumped four spots in the featherweight division, and is now sitting at #11. His opponent “Korean Zombie” Chang Sung Jung fell two spots to #12, while Alexander Volkanovski (who is slated to face Chad Mendes at UFC 232) moved up one spot to #10. Meanwhile in the women’s bantamweight division, Germaine de Randamie reminded her fellow 135-pound fighters that she is here to stay after dominant performance over Raquel Pennington. “Iron Lady” moved up three spots to #2, just behind Holly Holm and current champion Amanda Nunes.

It’s been a turbulent few year for Germaine de Randamie. After winning the inaugural UFC featherweight title with a controversial decision win over former bantamweight champion Holly Holm, de Randamie was stripped of that title based on her refusal to fight featherweight great Cris “Cyborg” Justino. From there, de Randamie shared her intention to drop back down the bantamweight division, where her UFC career began. De Randamie was scheduled to fight Marion Reneau in the co-main event at Ahoy Rotterdam in the Netherlands prior to the main event featuring heavyweights Stefan Struve and Alexander Volkov. MMA Junkie confirmed with UFC officials that de Randamie was forced to pull out of the contest due to suffering an injury.

Back in February, Dutch striking specialist Germaine de Randamie defeated Holly Holm by decision to become the first-ever UFC women’s featherweight champion. Though hers was a somewhat controversial win, it was a definite feel-good moment for the Dutchwoman and her fans. Unfortunately, her reign took a rather unfortunate turn several months later, when she refused to defend her title against top contender Cris “Cyborg” Justino, citing Cyborg’s previous failed drug test as a reason. Given that Cyborg has proven herself to be a clean fighter and a deserving title challenger, De Randamie was stripped of the title by the UFC. Cyborg will now battle Tonya Evinger for the vacant throne at UFC 214 this Saturday. On the latest edition of The MMA Hour, the former champion De Randamie recounted the process that led to the UFC stripping her of the title.

The former champ has been booked for a scrap with Marion Reneau (7-3-1), which will go down on September 2 in Rotterdam, in de Randamie’s home country of The Netherlands. Germaine de Randamie may no longer be the UFC women’s featherweight champion, however her feud with the UFC is still an extremely controversial one. After winning the belt earlier this year, it appeared as though the stars had aligned for Germaine de Randamie to defend her title against Cris Cyborg. De Randamie refused to fight Cyborg, explaining that the former Invicta FC champ is a “proven cheater” in regards to her drug testing history. While Cyborg’s team, and many others, held out hope for a GDR-Cyborg fight, de-Randamie was ultimately stripped of the title by the UFC, and Cris Cyborg was booked to fight Megan Anderson.

Today, the UFC announced that it had stripped De Randamie of her title as a result of this refusal, and that Cyborg will be battling Megan Anderson for the vacant title at UFC 214 this July 29. “UFC has informed Germaine de Randamie and her management team that she is being removed as the women’s featherweight champion due to her unwillingness to fight the No. 1 ranked contender, Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino,” The UFC said in a statement posted to UFC.com. Subsequently, top contender Justino will face newly signed Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson for the UFC women’s featherweight title in the co-main event of UFC® 214: CORMIER vs. JONES 2, July 29 in Anaheim, Calif.

This news immediately raised question about the status of Germaine de Randamie, who won the undisputed women’s featherweight title with a controversial decision defeat of Holly Holm back in February. De Randamie, as many speculated, has been stripped of the undisputed featherweight title so that this Cyborg-Anderson fight could be made possible. The promotion stripped the Dutch fighter of her title after she refused to fight Cyborg.

After winning the inaugural women’s featherweight championship by defeating Holly Holm earlier this year, Germaine de Randamie looked all but ready to defend the title against the presumptive #1 contender Cris Cyborg after Cyborg was cleared by USADA for a potential anti-doping violation. When Cyborg was indeed cleared by USADA, GDR revealed that she had no intentions of fighting the former Invicta FC women’s featherweight champ. While many believed the UFC would be able to book a fight between GDR and Cyborg, the champ revealed that she would be likely moving back down to 135, rather than fight Cris Cyborg, who she dubbed a “proven cheater”.
