Gilbert Burns has issued a statement following his UFC 299 third-round knockout loss to Jack Della Maddalena.

Burns was taking on the up-and-comer in his first fight since losing a decision to Belal Muhammad last May. The Brazilian had success early on as he was able to land some good strikes, but controlled Della Maddalena.

Going into the third round, many fans thought he was winning, and two of the three judges did have him up 20-18 going into the final round. Yet, in the final round, as Jack Della Maddalena got back up to his feet, Gilbert Burns went for another takedown and got caught by a knee, as the Aussie followed it up with ground-and-pound to get the KO win.

Following the loss, Burns took to Instagram to issue a statement and said the knockout came due to a bad mistake he made.

“Felt great in there! Put on a great training camp and a good strategy, unfortunately it’s the fight game made a bad decision and paid for it! And I was very happy to be in there! Shoutout to Jack Della on a great win! No excuses, just greatfull to God, for my family, my team, my friends my sponsors, supporters and to all the fans time to rest and expend a quality time with my family. See you guys soon!,” Burns wrote on Instagram.

It is a classy statement from Gilbert Burns who is one of the nicest fighters in the sport. As he says, the focus now turns to being with his family, but he is looking to get back in there soon.

With the loss to Della Maddalena, Burns is now 22-8 as a pro and on a two-fight losing skid. The Brazilian is 15-7 in the UFC and is currently ranked sixth at welterweight following the KO loss to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299.
