Gilbert Burns walks back on comments about Belal Muhammad not deserving a UFC title shot: “I don’t like the guy very much”
Gilbert Burns has gone back on his remarks about Belal Muhammad not deserving a UFC title shot.
For the longest time now, Gilbert Burns has been a big fan favorite in the UFC. He may not always be the most successful, but he’s certainly one of the most entertaining fighters in the welterweight division. This weekend at UFC 299, he’ll attempt to make a real statement when he locks horns with Jack Della Maddalena.
One man he’s faced previously, on short notice, is Belal Muhammad. He wasn’t able to get his hand raised, with Belal now believing he’s deserving of a shot at the title at 170 pounds.
After suggesting that Muhammad doesn’t deserve that opportunity, Burns has now changed his tune.
Burns’ Muhammad view
“I think Belal Muhammad deserves to fight for the title. For the numbers,” Burns told Renato Moicano. “The guy has a crazy winning streak. 10 fights, I don’t know. I think he deserves [it].
“To be honest, I just have something that I’m like, ‘That guy beat me. I got hurt,’ then he was talking so much,” he continued. “But I shouldn’t have said it the way I did. I apologize, I think he does deserve the title shot even though I don’t like the guy very much.”
“I lost to the guy, I was injured,” Burns said. “ He was kind of like, ‘Oh, I beat Gilbert Burns this way.’ I don’t hate anyone, I just don’t like him very much because he was saying too much, but I wish the guy the best.”
