Gina Carano sues Disney over ‘The Mandalorian’ firing, lawsuit reportedly funded by Elon Musk
Former MMA fighter Gina Carano is looking to get back her role in ‘The Mandalorian’.
In terms of fighter-turned-stars, there are few more high-profile than Gina Carano. From 2006 to 2009, the former Strikeforce title challenger accumulated a 7-1 record and wins over the likes of Tonya Evinger and Julie Kedzie. However, following a knockout loss to Cris Cyborg, she retired from the sport of MMA.
Later, Gina Carano went into the world of acting. She had various roles in big films over the years, including ‘Deadpool’, and ‘Fast & Furious 6’. However, in 2019, she landed the biggest role of her career in Disney’s ‘The Mandalorian’. Serving as one of the main stars alongside Pedro Pascal, it seemed that Carano’s career was set to take off.
That was until early 2021. That February, Disney pulled Gina Carano from the television show, due to politically-charged statements she made on X (formerly Twitter). The most controversial of which, was sharing a post comparing the treatment that Republicans face today, to victims of the Holocaust.
Three years on from her firing, Gina Carano has decided to sue Disney and Lucasfilm. Taking to X, she announced the lawsuit, alleging the media giants of discrimination and wrongful termination. Furthermore, Elon Musk will reportedly be bankrolling the suit. As of now, Carano is seeking at least $75,000 in damages, and to be recast in the television show.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude & thank you to [Elon Musk] & [X] for giving me an opportunity to bring my case to light.” A snippet of Gina Carano’s statement to social media read earlier today. “As for me, I would love to pick up where I left off & continue my journey of creating & participating in story-telling, which is my utmost passion & everything I worked so hard for. It has been difficult to move forward with the lies & labels stuck on me, backed & encouraged by the most powerful entertainment company in the world. I am grateful someone has come to my defense in such a powerful way & look forward to clearing my name.”
She continued, Thank you to all the people who have supported me & made your voices heard. I pray God blesses each & every one of you. With love, Gina Carano.”
As of now, Disney has yet to issue a comment on the lawsuit. In regards to Gina Carano’s career moving forward, she currently has no projects in the works. However, in late 2022, she did show interest in a potential long-awaited UFC showdown with Ronda Rousey.
‘Rowdy’ named Gina Carano as the one fight that she would be willing to return for around that summer. However, Dana White has recently shot down any sort of talk about Rousey returning to the UFC.
