GSP Talks Comeback: Reebok “could stop me from coming back”
Georges “Rush” St-Pierre has not come forward yet on his exact time that he’s officially coming back. Dana White is in a state of “I’ll believe it when I see it” mode, and now he’ll need to address one of the former champs main issues, the sponsorship/Reebok deal.
The Tristar member from Montreal, Quebec has been inching his way to the microphone to release his date of return. Instead ,GSP will be sitting down with MMA Hour to discuss his future in MMA.
“Look, I don’t know the Reebok deal,” he said. “My contract is different. I’m lucky, I have a great team of management behind me. I cannot comment on that because of sponsor issues and things like that. My contract is different than most people.”
When asked if the deal would ultimately stop him from going back to work for his former employer, the French-Canadian said it wasn’t necessarily a deal breaker for him. If anything, it’s UFC who could have an issue.
“It could stop, maybe, UFC from having me come back,” he concluded.
The Reebok deal is in it’s fledgling stage, a work in progress. It’s going to take time and a good product with correct spelling of fighters names to get the Reebok deal to make some sense for the fighters. Now if everyone was buying fighter kits, that would change the current Reebok situation. For now, it may be too soon to see how all of this will shake out.
It’s no secret St-Pierre is a top-sponsor money generator, as he has deals with Gatorade, Under Armour, and NOS Energy Drink, just to name a few. Of course, it’s safe to assume his income from those sponsors grows exponentially once their names are plastered all over the television during a pay-per-view (PPV) event. With the new Reebok deal, those days of “ad splashing” are over.
Do you think GSP will work out a “special” deal with the UFC?
