The Chechen-Swede first picked up two wins in the span of 10 days on Fight Island in July, defeating John Phillips by first-round submission and Rhys McKee by first-round TKO, then picked up his third win of the season when he knocked out Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Vegas 11, also in the first round.

Adesanya, who successfully defended his UFC Middleweight Championship for the second time last month against Paulo Costa, had his opportunity to fight the legend that is Anderson Silva back in February 2019. “The Last Stylebender” came out on top courtesy of a decisive unanimous decision victory in Melbourne, Australia.

Top contender Robert Whittaker called a potential rematch against UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya “a hard fight.” After defeating Jared Cannonier in the co-main event of UFC 254, UFC president Dana White said that Whittaker would likely be the next opponent for Adesanya. Of course, these two previously met at UFC 243 in October 2019. Whittaker was the champion heading into that fight but he lost his belt to Adesanya by knockout. Since then, Whittaker has won two straight fights against Cannonier and Darren Till to jump back into title contention, while Adesanya defended his belt against Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa.

UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya explained why Jon Jones hasn’t fought at heavyweight, suggesting the MMA legend is “scared.” Adesanya and Jones do not like each other at all and a superfight between the two appears to be looming. UFC president Dana White recently said that Adesanya has numerous options for his next fight. One option is staying at middleweight to defend his belt against the winner of UFC 254’s Robert Whittaker vs. Jared Cannonier. Another option is moving up to 205lbs to fight either new champion Jan Blachowicz or Jones.

After Adesanya beat Paulo Costa at UFC 253 and Jan Blachowicz claimed the vacant light heavyweight in the co-main event, many thought a superfight between them made sense. It would no doubt be a massive fight and if Adesanya could beat Blachowicz is only further the talks for the Jon Jones fight.
