UFC 254 medical suspensions: Jared Cannonier facing six-month sit

The medical suspensions for UFC 254 have been released, and as expected, a handful of fighters are facing long sits on the sidelines. Most notably, middleweight contender Jared Cannonier could be out for six months following his decision loss to the division’s former champion Robert Whittaker. Nathaniel Wood and Liana Jojua are also facing six-month suspensions following losses to Casey Kenny and Miranda Maverick.

UFC president Dana White has confirmed that Jared Cannonier will be next for Israel Adesanya as long as he beats Robert Whittaker at UFC 254. Immediately after Adesanya knocked out Paulo Costa in the main event of UFC 253, the question jumped to who should be next for the champ. If you look at the rankings, the highest-ranked fighter who has yet to get his crack at the belt is Cannonier. The former heavyweight and light heavyweight looks to make it four straight wins when he takes on Whittaker at UFC 254 next month in a fight that is a title eliminator at 185lbs.

Jared Cannonier says he is more than ready to step in if Israel Adesanya or Paulo Costa is forced out of the UFC 253 main event. Costa will challenge Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 253, scheduled for September 26. Cannonier, meanwhile, is scheduled to take on the division’s former champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 254 roughly a month later, on October 24.

Heading into his fight with Whittaker, Cannonier hasn’t fought in almost a year. “The Killa Gorilla” last beat Jack Hermansson by knockout in the second round of their September bout in 2019. Since then, the 36-year old suffered from a torn pectoral muscle that kept him out of action.

The Gorillas were rumoured to fight each other at UFC 248, but visa problems for Till and an injury from Cannonier meant the primate vs. primate matchup never happened.

UFC middleweight contender Jared Cannonier is currently without an opponent for UFC 248 and he has now turned his attention to a fight against Kelvin Gastelum. Cannonier was originally set to fight Robert Whittaker at UFC 248 but Whittaker withdrew from the fight due to personal reasons. Cannonier was then set to take on Darren Till, but Till was also removed from the fight due to what UFC president Dana White says was an ankle injury. That leaves Cannonier without an opponent for the March pay-per-view event.

After Robert Whittaker, Cannonier’s original opponent, pulled out due to personal reasons many assumed Till would be the logical replacement and it was announced he was. But, he injured his ankle and UFC president Dana White said that fight was off.

Report: Robert Whittaker out of fight vs Jared Cannonier at UFC 248

Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will not be making his return to the Octagon in March. According to Ariel Helwani of ESPN, Whittaker is out of his scheduled fight against Jared Cannonier at UFC 248 due to personal reasons. Helwani added that the UFC would like to keep Cannonier on the card but no opponent has been found to replace Whittaker as of now. There was no further information given as to why Whittaker is out of the fight.
