Three potential options to headline UFC 233

Cole Shelton - December 11, 2018

UFC 233, the first pay-per-view of 2019, is just over a month away and it still doesn’t have a main event. That was not initially the case, as a flyweight title fight between TJ Dillashaw and Henry Cejudo was originally supposed to headline the card. However, when that fight was moved up a week to headline the first ESPN card in Brooklyn, UFC 233 was left without a main event. Now, with the majority of champions booked, injured or recovering from recent fights, the UFC finds itself in a tough situation. There are not a lot of viable options left available for the UFC 233 main event — especially if the promotion wants to compete with Bellator 214, which will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Ryan Bader, and airs the same night.

When Nicco Montano was hospitalized ahead of her planned UFC 228 title fight with Valentina Shevchenko, the UFC began a frantic and ultimately unsuccessful search for a replacement opponent. While the promotion ultimately decided to pull Shevchenko from the card, strawweight contender Jessica Andrade says she offered to abandon her planned strawweight fight with Karolina Kowalkiewicz and battle Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title on short notice. “I even offered to fight for the belt if they agreed to, but since they had already weighed me and done all the work, I wasn’t allowed by the athletic commission,” Andrade said at the UFC 228 post-fight press conference (transcript via Sherdog). “But I’m happy I was able to help the promotion, help the UFC with a great show and excite people.”

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2018

Late last month, dangerous strawweight contender Jessica Andrade picked up a close but impressive win over Tecia Torres. While this victory is now in the rear-view it created a lingering issue for Andrade that she feels needs to be settled. During the fight, Andrade says, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes – a fellow Brazilian – was actively cheering Torres on from cage-side. This didn’t go over well with Andrade, who is now keen to take her gripes out on Nunes’ girlfriend Nina Ansaroff in the future.

Drake Riggs - February 21, 2018

The current #2 ranked UFC strawweight contender is none other than 115-pound powerhouse, ‘Bate Estaca’ Jessica Andrade. Andrade will be featured this Saturday in UFC on Fox 28’s co-main event when she takes on Tecia Torres in a battle that very well could provide us with our next title contender. But who may they winner battle for the title? We’ll have to wait until UFC 223 on April 7 to know that answer. But what we know for sure is that it will either be the former longtime champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk or the brand new champion who wants to prove that she is here to stay, Rose Namajunas.
