Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks is currently in the midst of a rough stretch. First, he lost his belt in a competitive fight with Robbie Lawler. Though he was able to rebound with a nice win over Matt Brown in his next fight, his next fight thereafter saw him succumb to a first round TKO dealt by Stephen Thompson. From there, things got even worse for the former champ, as he failed to make weight for a UFC 200 bout with Kelvin Gastelum, and ultimately lost that bout by decision.

Last month, former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks made headlines when he revealed that his upcoming UFC 207 fight with Neil Magny could very well be his last fight in the Octagon before retiring from MMA. While Hendricks at one point was considered as one of the best welterweights on the planet, even beating welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre in the eyes of many at UFC 167 in 2013, he has since gone just 2-3 in his last 5. Over the course of his last 5 fights, Hendricks won the vacant welterweight championship by defeating Robbie Lawler, then losing the belt to Lawler in a narrow rematch.

Several years ago, NCAA Division I All-American Johny Hendricks was considered to be one of the best fighters on the planet. After dropping a controversial split decision to Georges St-Pierre in the main event of UFC 167 back in 2013, Hendricks went on to win the vacant welterweight championship by defeating Robbie Lawler at UFC 171. In just his next fight, Hendricks lost the belt to Robbie Lawler via split decision, in a fight which was considered controversial by many. Since then, Hendricks has gone on a bit of a skid, going just 1-2, recently going on a 2-fight losing streak that most recently saw him drop a unanimous decision to Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 200 in a catchweight fight due to Hendricks missing weight.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Matt Brown will take on the talented Tarec Saffiedine at the event in an awesome welterweight showdown. Now, UFC 207 has grown by two more welterweight showdowns, and from the early vantage point, both look like they’ll be extremely entertaining.

In less than two weeks, at UFC 200, former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks will square off against Kelvin Gastelum in a pivotal welterweight matchup. Hendricks is coming off the first KO/TKO loss of his career at the hands of #1 contender Stephen Thompson, who finished Hendricks with a beautiful display of kicks. Gastelum on the other hand is coming off a split decision loss to Neil Magny in his return to welterweight.

According to a report from MMAFighting, a key welterweight fight is being targeted for July’s blockbuster UFC 200 event in Las Vegas. The report states that the UFC is aiming to have former UFC welterweight champ Johny Hendricks (17-4 MMA) take on rising contender Kelvin Gastelum (11-2 MMA) at the July 9 pay-per-view event.
