Coach details how Jon Jones could defeat Brock Lesnar

By Tom Taylor - August 1, 2017

Over the weekend, in the main event of UFC 214, light heavyweight legend Jon Jones reclaimed the divisional title with a third-round knockout of his arch rival, Daniel Cormier. In the buildup to and fallout of this fight, the new champ generated dozens of headlines by calling for a fight with former UFC heavyweight champ and long-time WWE star Brock Lesnar.

As outlandish as that callout initially sounded, it seems like the fight might actually happen.

If the fight does happen, Jones will have his hands full with perhaps the most physically imposing fighter in MMA history. Apparently, however, his team sees a pretty clear path to victory over the hulking superstar.

Jon Jones’ coach Brandon Gibson broke down a potential Jones vs. Lesnar fight in a recent interview with TheMacLife. In his opinion, Jones’ success against Cormier is a clear indicator of what he could do to Lesnar.

“I do think he has genuine skill,” Gibson said of Lesnar. “While he’s not a precise striker, he does carry a lot of pressure, he’s explosive. Once he gets on top of his opponents, I think he has great positional awareness, ground and pound and obviously the strength and size that comes along with all that is Brock Lesnar. And, he’s been a former UFC champion. I think that he has the confidence that it takes to compete at this level.”

Gibson then elaborated that defeating Lesnar, like Cormier, will depend on Jones’ ability to bait him into making mistakes.

“We saw the traps we were able to set up against one of the greats ever in Daniel Cormier. Imagine what we’ll do to Brock Lesnar.”

Brock Lesnar has not been seen in the cage since July 2016, when he picked up a decision win over Mark Hunt. Regrettably, he then tested positive for the estrogen blocker clomiphene, which meant that his win was overturned.

How do you think a fight between Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar would go?
