Jon Jones on UFC 200 training: “I’ve done almost zero weightlifting”
Prior to Jon Jones’ return to the Octagon in April at UFC 197, the pound for pound kingpin packed on a considerable amount of muscle. Many questioned whether or not this would have a significant impact on Jones’ performance inside the Octagon given that he was carrying so much extra muscle.
After his unanimous decision win over Ovince Saint Preux, Jones stated that he felt great, and could even go another 5 rounds. However, with less than 2 weeks to go until his UFC 200 rematch with Daniel Cormier, Jones revealed that he has spent the majority of this training camp burning off muscle with endurance training.
MMAJunkie has the quotes:
“For this training camp, I’ve done almost zero weightlifting whatsoever. I’ve actually been working on burning off the muscle by overloading in endurance. So I think you guys will be able to tell during the weigh-ins and during the fight that I look a lot more like I used to look, a lot less muscular, and my endurance feels amazing. That’s one of the No. 1 ways to beat ‘DC,’ to ‘DC’ ‘DC’ by embracing the grind and beating him in the dog fight. And that’s what I’m prepared to do.”
