At the time, Jones was the reigning and defending UFC light heavyweight champion, and it was widely expected that he would fight Blachowicz for the belt. However, Jones decided to instead vacate his belt and announce that he was moving up to the UFC heavyweight division, instead. That left the belt vacant and Blachowicz won it when he knocked out Dominick Reyes last year at UFC 253.

Adam D Martin - August 26, 2021
UFC legend Jon Jones continued to flaunt his heavyweight transformation in a new video that “Bones” shared with fans on his social media. Jones is the former UFC light heavyweight champion and arguably the greatest MMA fighter of all time. In 2020, Jones defeated Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 to defend the 205lbs belt, but soon afterwards he vacated the title and announced his move to heavyweight, which had been a long time coming. Jones was supposed to make his UFC heavyweight debut this summer against UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, but the fight never happened after both men didn’t agree to the money the UFC offered. Instead, Jones is continuing to sit out and train for his heavyweight debut, which UFC president Dana White says will now happen in 2022 instead of happening in 2021 as he originally intended to.

However, with Jones moving up to the UFC heavyweight division, and with Adesanya losing to Blachowicz in his bid to become the promotion’s 205lbs champion, it appears as though there is not as much interest in this fight now. At least that’s what Jones’ coach Mike Winkeljohn claimed in a recent interview with Submission Radio, where the veteran striking coach explained what motivates Jones.

However, White later said that Jones will not be fighting until 2022, which indicates that he is not interested in fighting Miocic at this time. With UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou set to unify his belt against interim champion Ciryl Gane first, Jones will likely be waiting for the winner, and his coach Mike Winkeljohn confirmed as much. According to his longtime coach, Miocic is not viewed as a challenge for Jones.

The fight never ended up getting made and instead, it looks like the possibility of Jones vs. Ngannou is something that may not even happen now. That’s because, at UFC 265, Ciryl Gane defeated Derrick Lewis to become the interim UFC heavyweight champion, and now he will be next in line to fight Ngannou.
