Dominick Reyes received his second title opportunity when he squared off with Jan Blachowicz for the promotions vacant light heavyweight championship at UFC 253. Reyes had previously challenged for the UFC’s light heavyweight title this past February against Jon Jones, but ultimately wound up suffering a decision loss to the longtime division kingpin in ‘Bones’.

Jon Jones was clearly watching tonight’s UFC 253 main event between undefeated middleweights Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa. The UFC’s reigning middleweight champion, Adesanya (19-0 MMA), was returning to action for the first time since defeating Yoel Romero this past March. Prior to his lackluster unanimous decision win over the Cuban, ‘Stylebender’ had earned a sensational knockout victory over Robert Whittaker at UFC 243.

Tonight’s UFC 253 event is co-headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between top division contenders Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz. Reyes (12-1 MMA) will be returning to action for the first time since suffering a controversial decision loss to Jon Jones in his original bid for the title at UFC 247. Prior to the setback, ‘The Devastator’ was coming off a first round knockout victory over former middleweight champion Chris Weidman in October of 2019.

Eric Albarracin says his star pupil, upcoming UFC middleweight title challenger Paulo Costa, still wants to fight Jon Jones in the future. Costa is set to challenge Israel Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title in the main event of UFC 253 on September 26. Speaking to ESPN recently, Albarracin expressed his confidence that Costa will win that title fight, and also suggested that Costa could move up to the light heavyweight division in search of a fight with Jones thereafter.

Jones recently announced on social media that he vacated the UFC light heavyweight title, and the vacant title will be on the line at UFC 253 in September between Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz. Jones made the decision to drop his belt and make the move to heavyweight for a few reasons, which he expanded on in a social media post. Taking to his Twitter on Thursday night, Jones expanded on his decision to vacate the 205lbs belt.
