UFC CEO Dana White is confident fight fans will eventually see Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall: “How do you not?”
UFC CEO Dana White is confident that fight fans will eventually see a Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall fight.
It was Tom Aspinall (14-3 MMA) who defeated Sergei Pavlovich (18-2 MMA) by KO last November at UFC 295. With the victory, the Brit became the interim heavyweight titleholder.
The original bout at UFC 295 was to be between Jon Jones (27-1 MMA) and Stipe Miocic (20-4 MMA) for the heavyweight crown, but Jones had to withdraw due to injury.
Jones, at 36, has only 1 loss in the Octagon. The New Yorker last fought and defeated Ciryl Gane (12-2 MMA) in March of 2023 at UFC 285.
Miocic, 41, has not fought since March of 2021 at UFC 260 where he was defeated by Francis Ngannou (17-3 MMA) by KO at 0:52 of round 2.
White appeared on ‘The Rush with Maxx Crosby’ and outlined ‘Bones’ return to the Octagon to fight Miocic:
“This summer, it (Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic) should happen. It’s interesting, I think it (dual retirement) depends on who wins. Either guy that wins, how do you not fight Aspinall? Right?”
Continuing, the UFC CEO said (h/t MMANews):
“I think there’s almost like, a courtesy, if you will. If you’re looked at as one of the GOATs, whoever wins this fight, it’s almost a courtesy thing to give that guy the shot, give him an opportunity to win — or you win and it just absolutely cements (your legacy).”
It’s true that Jones has hinted at retirement following a victory over Miocic, but apparently White believes a battle between Jones and Aspinall will happen in the future.
Aspinall had previously challenged his ‘interim’ title victory, believing Jones should be stripped of the title and he should be declared the UFC heavyweight champion. Of course that did not come to fruition.
Do you agree with White that inevitably there will be a battle in the cage between Jones and Aspinall?
Are you looking forward to seeing Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic this summer?
