UFC 273 is currently set to be headlined by Alexander Volkanovski defending his featherweight crown against Chan Sung Jung. Meanwhile, the co-main event features the long-awaited rematch between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan. Their first encounter ended in a disqualification win for ‘Funk Master’ in March 2021 at UFC 259.

The highly anticipated main event did not result in the highlight reel knockout many fans were anticipating. Instead, the normally fierce Brazilians remained very cautious throughout the fight, resulting in a twenty-five minute affair. Thiago Santos was able to land a few heavy shots during the contest, which proved to be the difference in the fight.

Just a few years ago Gastelum was on the verge of winning the strap at 185 pounds but now, he’s lost five of his last six with many being left to question whether or not he’s really at that elite level anymore.

UFC middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum issued a statement following his unanimous decision loss to Jared Cannonier at UFC Vegas 34. Gastelum went toe-to-toe with Cannonier for 25 minutes but lost 48-47 on all three of the judges’ scorecards at the end of the five rounds. The fight was extremely competitive throughout and it ultimately came down to how the judges scored the first round. Although fans on social media seemed split, all three of the judges scored the first round for Cannonier — as well as the third and fourth rounds — and gave Gastelum the second and fifth rounds, as “The Killa Gorilla” walked away with the unanimous decision victory.

The official weigh-ins for UFC Vegas 35 took place on Friday in Las Vegas, and 23 of the 24 fighters scheduled to compete made weight. The main event of UFC Vegas 34 features top-10 ranked middleweights Jared Cannonier and Kelvin Gastelum going at it for five rounds or less. Cannonier successfully weighed in on his first attempt on the scale, coming in at 185lbs. Gastelum, meanwhile, had an early scale scare as he weighed in at 186.25lbs on his first attempt on the scale. However, he was able to make it to 186lbs on his second attempt and the main event is still on.

And if you ask Gastelum what he thinks about that potential title fight, he thinks there’s a good chance the champ loses.

Paulo Costa withdraws from UFC fight with Jared Cannonier, Kelvin Gastelum set as replacement

Paulo Costa has been forced to withdraw from his slated UFC fight with Jared Cannonier and will be replaced by fellow middleweight Kelvin Gastelum. Costa (13-1 MMA) and Cannonier (13-5 MMA) were expected to headliner a UFC event on August 21 in a location still to be determined. However, according to ESPN‘s Brett Okamoto, ‘The Eraser’ has been forced to withdraw from the bout and will be replaced by former TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum.

UFC middleweight contender Robert Whittaker issued a statement following his unanimous decision win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Vegas 24. In one of his most complete performances to date, Whittaker won a lopsided unanimous decision in the main event of this past Saturday’s UFC Vegas 24 card. Whittaker outstruck Gastelum on the feet and he also utilized his wrestling in order to mix things up and take Gastelum out of his element. It was one of Whittaker’s best performances in the Octagon to date as he picked up his third straight victory. It was the kind of win that could earn him a title shot rematch against UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya in his next fight.

UFC middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum issued a statement following his unanimous decision loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC Vegas 24. Gastelum stepped up on short notice to fight Whittaker on Saturday night at UFC Vegas 24, filling in for Paulo Costa. Whittaker and Gastelum previously coached TUF 28: Heavy Hitters and so they have trained for each other in the past. On Saturday, they finally met inside the Octagon, and the fight didn’t go as planned for Gastelum, as he just wasn’t as competitive as many expected him to be. Instead, Whittaker dominated the fight from bell-to-bell and won 50-45 on the judges’ scorecards. It was a fantastic performance by the Aussie, while for Gastelum it was a tough loss after he beat Ian Heinisch in his last fight.

The official weigh-ins for UFC Vegas 24 took place on Friday, and Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum made weight for the main event fight. In the headliner, Whittaker and Gastelum meet with a potential middleweight title shot on the line. Whittaker, the former champion, is coming off of back-to-back wins over Darren Till and Jared Cannonier to jump back into title contention after losing his belt to Israel Adesanya in 2019. As for Gastelum, he recently snapped a three-fight win streak with a unanimous decision win over Ian Heinisch at UFC 258. After Paulo Costa fell out of the fight with an illness, Gastelum volunteered to step in on short notice and the UFC gave him the opportunity. The winner of this bout will surely figure into the title discussions at 185lbs.
