Kelvin Gastelum has explained why he decided to take a short-notice replacement t UFC 273. Gastelum was set to face Nassourdine Imavov but the Frenchman had visa issues so the fight was off. It was then reported that Gastelum would be removed from the card and the bout with Imanov would be rescheduled. However, on Tuesday, it was revealed that ‘KG’ would now face unranked fighter Dricus Du Plessis, and the former TUF winner has a good reason why.

Kelvin Gastelum will remain on UFC 273 but it will not be against Nassourdine Imavov as originally expected. Gastelum was supposed to take on the surging French prospect, but on Monday it was revealed Imavov was out of the fight. However, according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Gastelum will now fight Dricus Du Plessis at middleweight.

UFC middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum issued a statement following his unanimous decision loss to Jared Cannonier at UFC Vegas 34. Gastelum went toe-to-toe with Cannonier for 25 minutes but lost 48-47 on all three of the judges’ scorecards at the end of the five rounds. The fight was extremely competitive throughout and it ultimately came down to how the judges scored the first round. Although fans on social media seemed split, all three of the judges scored the first round for Cannonier — as well as the third and fourth rounds — and gave Gastelum the second and fifth rounds, as “The Killa Gorilla” walked away with the unanimous decision victory.

Cannonier successfully weighed in on his first attempt on the scale, coming in at 185lbs. Costa (13-1 MMA) and Cannonier (13-5 MMA) were expected to headliner a UFC event on August 21 in a location still to be determined. However, according to ESPN‘s Brett Okamoto, ‘The Eraser’ has been forced to withdraw from the bout and will be replaced by former TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum.

Whittaker and Gastelum previously coached TUF 28: Heavy Hitters and so they have trained for each other in the past. On Saturday, they finally met inside the Octagon, and the fight didn’t go as planned for Gastelum, as he just wasn’t as competitive as many expected him to be. Instead, Whittaker dominated the fight from bell-to-bell and won 50-45 on the judges’ scorecards. It was a fantastic performance by the Aussie, while for Gastelum it was a tough loss after he beat Ian Heinisch in his last fight.
