New UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is almost ready to start focusing on his first title defense. The undefeated champion will soon fly to California, where he will begin a training camp that could well culminate with a fight with Conor McGregor. “Very soon I’m going to come to USA, to California and begin my training camp,” Nurmagomedov said on the social media platform Live Raise (transcribed by Jim Edwards for MMANytt).

Though nothing is official just yet, all signs point to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov fighting former two-division champion Conor McGregor sometime later this year — perhaps even at UFC 229 on October 6.  Speaking to Sport24.ru this week, Nurmagomedov discussed this possible matchup. Apparently, he’s worried about McGregor bailing on the bout.

Late last week, a report out of Russia suggested that a lightweight title fight between undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former two-division champ Conor McGregor could headline UFC 229, this October 6 in Las Vegas. Over the weekend, McGregor’s striking coach Owen Roddy was asked about this possibility. While he assured he couldn’t confirm anything outright, he did say McGregor is training hard, and that the fight with Nurmagomedov is “brewing up nicely.”

Russian MMA insiders, MMA Team Dagestan have reported that the potential lightweight championship bout is in the works for the October 6th date in Las Vegas at UFC 229.

There is certainly no shortage of options for UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s first title defense. Of all the options available, however, none would be bigger or more lucrative than a fight between Nurmagomedov and former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor. In the opinion of UFC President Dana White, this is absolutely the fight to make. Unfortunately, McGregor is presently neck-deep in a complicated legal situation, which stems from his infamous rampage in Brooklyn — you know, the one where he threw a dolly through the window of a shuttle bus carrying Nurmagomedov and a number of other UFC 223 fighters. So, while White hopes to book a McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov fight, he says he’ll first have to see how McGregor’s legal situation shakes out, starting with his June 15 court date in New York City.

Current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is apparently moving on from Conor McGregor. According to the Russian’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, “The Eagle” is now focused on scoring a fight with former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

Last night, in the co-main event of the UFC’s debut in Santiago, Chile, strawweight wrestling specialist Tatiana Suarez picked up a dominant, first-round submission victory over the highly-regarded Alexa Grasso. Suarez’s grappling dominance was so impressive in this fight that she was quickly compared to undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, and absolute grappling juggernaut, post-fight.

As expected, Kevin Lee, who took out Edson Barboza in the main event, has moved into the lightweight top 5. Elsewhere in the rankings, Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have both made seemingly arbitrary moves on the pound-for-pound list, while formerly ranked bantamweight Leslie Smith has removed from the rankings following her controversial UFC release.
