Chael Sonnen on a potential Khamzat Chimaev vs Gilbert Burns fight: “If you hear that anywhere, do not support it”

Harry Kettle - November 19, 2021

Chael Sonnen doesn’t believe Khamzat Chimaev vs Gilbert Burns should be the direction UFC goes in. As of this writing, the UFC appears to be favouring the idea of putting Khamzat Chimaev up against Gilbert Burns in what would serve as a huge welterweight showdown. If that transpires, it may well put Chimaev on the doorstep of a UFC welterweight title shot if he’s able to get the win.

Gilbert Burns believes he will fight Khamzat Chimaev in 2022, predicts it will be "Fight of the Night"

Adam D Martin - November 17, 2021

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns believes he will fight Khamzat Chimaev in 2022, predicting that it will be the “Fight of the Night.” Chimaev is one of the fastest-rising welterweight fighters on the UFC roster, having won all four of his fights by stoppage since entering the UFC last year. After spending a year on the sidelines after getting COVID-19 and subsequent health issues, Chimaev is finally healthy now. Last month, he returned to the Octagon at UFC 267 and put on one heck of a performance against Li Jingliang, as he took him down to the mat and finished him quickly.

Gilbert Burns open to fighting anyone, but Colby Covington and Khamzat Chimaev top the list

Adam D Martin - November 15, 2021

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns is open to fighting anyone, but he says that Colby Covington and Khamzat Chimaev top the list. Burns is the No. 2 ranked welterweight in the UFC, so it’s natural that he is connected to fights with the other top fighters in the division. On Sunday, reports emerged that Burns could be matched up against Chimaev sometime in 2022, though that fight is far from a done deal. Speaking to MMAjunkie.com in a recent interview, Burns was asked what he wants next. As far as Burns goes, he is down to fight anyone that the UFC offers him, but if he had to choose someone, in particular, it would be either Covington or Chimaev next.

He is already 4-0 in the UFC and has looked absolutely amazing, so there is reason to believe that this is a fighter who has all the makings of someone who could be a champ one day.

Chimaev smashed three foes on Fight Island last year and then, after taking a year off due to health issues stemming from COVID-19, he returned at UFC 267 last month and he smashed Li Jingliang in his return to the sport. It was a phenomenal victory by Chimaev and it got everyone connected to the sport talking about him, including his fellow divisional rivals such as Muhammad, who noticed what Chimaev did.

Adam D Martin - November 4, 2021

UFC welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev responded after receiving multiple insults from his divisional rival Colby Covington. Covington took shots at Chimaev at the UFC 268 pre-fight press conference. In addition to poking fun of his name and calling him “Cumshot” Chimaev, Covington also poked fun at Chimaev for contracting COVID-19 and temporarily retiring from the sport. There are very few fighters who are able to get under the skin of their rivals the way that Covington has, and just a day after making all of these insults, Chimaev shot back at him on social media.

Adam D Martin - November 4, 2021

White recently revealed that he is going to offer Diaz the fight against Chimaev, who has become one of the biggest stars in the UFC these days following his big win over Li Jingliang at UFC 267. However, Diaz doesn’t appear to be super interested in the fight. Quite frankly, there are a lot of fans who also don’t seem to be too keen on this fight booking, as there have been plenty of complaints by fans since the potential fight was rumored. However, White believes the people complaining about the fight are “morons.”

Daniel Cormier suggests Khamzat Chimaev fight Gilbert Burns next

Adam D Martin - November 3, 2021

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier suggested that emerging welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev fight against Gilbert Burns next. Chimaev absolutely destroyed Li Jingliang on the UFC 267 main card in what was by far the most impressive performance of his career. He is now a perfect 4-0 in the Octagon and there are some who believe that Chimaev should be fast-tracked towards a title shot. However, it seems likely that he will have to fight at least one more time before the UFC gives him the shot at the UFC welterweight title. The promotion is reportedly looking into the possibility of a fight against Nate Diaz, but so far, nothing has been made official.

Adam D Martin - November 3, 2021

Emerging UFC welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev sent a message to promotional superstar Nate Diaz, simply stating “let’s go bro.” Chimaev smashed Li Jingliang in the first round and tapped him out with a tight rear-naked choke at this past Saturday’s UFC 267 event. It was another phenomenal victory for Chimaev, who improved to 4-0 in the UFC with four finishes. He has been so utterly dominant that he has actually only been hit with one significant strike, by John Phillips in his UFC debut on Fight Island last year. Since then, all three of Rhys McKee, Gerald Meerschaert, and now Jingliang were not able to mount any sort of offense against him.

Chimaev is coming off of an incredible first-round submission win over Li Jingliang at UFC 267 that improved his pro record to 10-0, including a 4-0 record in the UFC. Incredibly, Chimaev has only been hit with one significant strike through four fights in the Octagon, as he’s completely run through everyone in his path. It has been a phenomenal start to Chimaev’s UFC career, and it looks like the promotion is now considering putting him on the fast-track to superstardom by matching him up against one of the UFC’s biggest names.

Li Jingliang reacts following first-round stoppage loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 267

Adam D Martin - October 31, 2021

UFC welterweight contender Li Jingliang reacted following his first-round stoppage loss to Khamzat Chimaev at Saturday’s UFC 267 event. Jingliang was coming off of a huge KO win over Santiago Ponzinibbio on Fight Island earlier this year, but going up against a guy like Chimaev is an entirely different task. Almost as soon as the bell rang, Chimaev was able to pick up Jingliang, walk him right across the Octagon, and throw him down to the canvass, all while talking crap to UFC president Dana White. Not long after that, Chimaev was able to take Jingliang’s neck and choke him out.
