UFC fan favorite Sam Alvey has told Leon Edwards to gain some humility after the latter called for a title shot following his fight against Belal Muhammad. It’s safe to say that the MMA community has been mixed in reacting to Edwards’ no contest against Muhammad. While some will happily point out how good he looked in the first round, others note that the eye poke was a nasty one – even if it was a pretty unlucky way to end his first fight back in almost two years.

Originally, Edwards was supposed to face Khamzat Chimaev, but complications from COVID-19 forced him out of the bout. Muhammad ended up taking the fight on short notice to attempt to become a legit welterweight title contender. Muhammad suffered a nasty eye poke in the early goings of the second round of his main event fight against Edwards at this past Saturday’s UFC Vegas 21 event. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the eye poke was so severe that the cage-side doctor and referee Herb Dean were forced to wave off the fight and call it a No Contest (accidental eye poke). But despite not actually winning the fight, Edwards has said since the fight ended that he wants to get a UFC welterweight title shot, and Muhammad doesn’t agree with that whatsoever.

UFC welterweight Leon Edwards released a statement after his main event against Belal Muhammad ended in a No Contest due to an accidental eye poke. “Rocky” went toe to toe with Muhammad on Saturday night in an exciting fight at UFC Vegas 21. Edwards, despite being out of the Octagon for almost two years, was clearly the favorite in a bout that saw Muhammad come in with very little pressure on his shoulders.

Muhammad and Edwards had just started the second round when Muhammad received a nasty eye poke that left him unable to see. The doctor and referee Herb Dean deemed Muhammad unable to continue fighting and Dean declared the fight a No Contest due to an accidental eye poke. While some have called for the UFC to run the fight back, Edwards himself thinks that he is ready to move on and fighting for the UFC welterweight title.

A new close-up photo has revealed just how gruesome the eye poke that Leon Edwards landed on Belal Muhammad at UFC Vegas 21 actually was. Muhammad was fighting in the first main event of his UFC career, taking the fight with Edwards on short notice after Khamzat Chimaev withdrew due to COVID-19 health issues. After a competitive first round, the second round was just starting when Edwards landed a nasty eye poke to Muhammad that had “Remember the Name” writhing in pain. It was clear that Muhammad’s vision was negatively impacted by the eye poke, and after a discussion with the cage-side physician, referee Herb Dean ruled the fight a No Contest.
