Alex Volkanovski confident he can beat Max Holloway after UFC 240

Max Holloway successfully defended the UFC featherweight title with a unanimous decision win at UFC 240, but his opponent Frankie Edgar didn’t make it particularly easy for him. Alex Volkanovski, the man widely expected to get the next crack at Holloway, was cage-side for the fight, and says he scored it more closely than the judges did. “I actually thought that was a really close,” Volkanovski told MMA Fighting. “Sitting on the sidelines there, I thought it was a bit closer than what the judges scored, 50-45. I thought Frankie might have won some rounds. Definitely competitive I thought.”

At UFC 240, Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar finally shared the Octagon together after two previous attempts failed. In the end, it was Hawaii’s Holloway who came out on top, beating “The Answer” by unanimous decision. It was a competitive fight with both Holloway and Edgar having their moments. Yet, it was the champion who landed the better strikes and defended the takedowns en route to victory.

Max Holloway put his UFC featherweight title on the line in tonight’s main event against Frankie Edgar. “Blessed” Holloway looked to bounce back from his recent loss against Dustin Poirier. Dustin and Max went all five rounds at UFC 236 for the promotions interim lightweight title, but “The Diamond” Poirier gained the victory over Holloway via an explosive unanimous decision win. That was the first defeat for the Hawaiian since his 2013 loss against Conor McGregor.

Max Holloway was set to take on Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223, this after Tony Ferguson had to withdraw last minute due to an injury. There, the featherweight champion would have been moving up in weight to make his UFC lightweight debut. However, the fight did not come to fruition as the commission stopped the Hawaiian from cutting weight. Since then, Max Holloway went back down to featherweight and defended his title against Brian Ortega at UFC 231. He then got another chance to fight at lightweight at UFC 236 when he took on Dustin Poirier for the promotions interim lightweight title. Had Holloway emerged victorious, he would have once again been in line for a fight with Nurmagomedov. But, the featherweight king lost the bout and is now headed back to 145-pounds for a fight with Frankie Edgar.
