He retired following a win over Dominick Cruz at UFC 249 in another defense of his bantamweight crown. However, shortly following his abrupt retirement, the former two-weight champion began discussing a return.

In the first Metaverse fight this past weekend, Khabib Nurmagomedov knocked out Max Holloway in what proved to be a fascinating test event. As part of the Legionfarm NFT launch, Khabib and Holloway – who were meant to square off way back at UFC 223 – went toe to toe on the Metaverse platform. Khabib played the role of Apollo Creed with “Blessed” portraying the great Ivan Drago.

The once-proposed UFC 223 main event, Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Max Holloway, will happen in the Metaverse this Saturday. Back in April 2018, UFC fans were treated to one of the most chaotic fight weeks in the promotion’s history. Khabib Nurmagomedov was scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson, only for a bizarre injury to force “El Cucuy” out of the contest. Then, Max Holloway stepped in to take the UFC lightweight title bout on short notice, but he wasn’t given clearance to compete by doctors.

Just a few weeks ago it was announced that Alex Volkanovski and Max Holloway would finally settle the score in a trilogy fight at UFC 273. However, a couple of days later, Holloway was forced to withdraw from the contest due to injury.

UFC featherweight Max Holloway has been forced to pull out of his UFC 272 trilogy showdown with Alexander Volkanovski. ESPN is reporting that Holloway, who accepted the fight just a matter of days ago, aggravated an old injury on Thursday and will therefore be unable to compete on the March 5 card in Las Vegas. As of this writing, no official statement has been made by the UFC regarding a potential replacement or whether the fight will be rescheduled for a later date.

Petr Yan and Alexander Volkanovski have opened as the two betting favorites for UFC 272 after their recent fight announcements. While a lot of the UFC’s immediate focus is going on UFC 270, and understandably so, the UFC 272 pay-per-view in March is already beginning to take shape. The promotion recently announced that it will be headlined by two blockbuster title bouts: Alexander Volkanovski vs Max Holloway 3 for the UFC featherweight title, and Aljamain Sterling vs Petr Yan 2 for the UFC bantamweight title.

UFC President Dana White revealed to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that Sterling will look to defend his belt at the event in a rematch against Petr Yan. Volkanovski fought Holloway on Fight Island last year in a rematch and won a controversial split decision to keep his belt. Many people who watched that fight felt that Holloway did enough to win it, but Volkanovski got the judges’ decision to move to 2-0 against Holloway. Since then, Holloway has beaten both Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez by decision and he seems to be the next man up for a title shot at 145lbs. However, following Holloway’s recent win over Rodriguez, he also mentioned Charles Oliveira and Conor McGregor as potential opponents, though most fans thought he would target Volkanovski specifically.

It was one of the best fights of the year, but at the end of the five rounds, Holloway was the winner via unanimous decision. However, it was one of those fights where the stock of both men went up. For Holloway, it could be the win that earns him another title shot at 145lbs, while for Rodriguez this performance should be enough to keep him ranked in the top-five at 145lbs. Overall, it was just an amazing fight.

It was an absolute war, but at the end of the 25 minutes, it was Holloway who got his hand raised by unanimous decision. Fans and media were expecting Holloway to call out Volkanovski given that he had a close loss to him last year on Fight Island, but “Blessed” instead listed several opponents. He mentioned Volkanovski as an option, but he also brought up Conor McGregor and Charles Oliveira.

Holloway entered the fight coming off a five-round dominant decision win over Calvin Kattar where he landed 445 significant strikes. Prior to that, he suffered back-to-back decision losses to Alexander Volkanovski to lose his featherweight title. Yair Rodriguez, meanwhile, hadn’t fought since 2019 due to a USADA suspension and injures but was coming off a decision win over Jeremy Stephens.

Holloway defeated Yair Rodriguez via unanimous decision in an absolute war that headlined UFC Vegas 42. It was an amazing fight from both men as they went the distance and tried to finish each other the entire time. In the end, it was Holloway who defeated Rodriguez by 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46 scorecards, and now that he has gotten by “El Pantera,” Holloway seems like he’s next in line for a big fight next time.
