Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway 3 set for UFC 276

Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway will finally be having their trilogy match. According to MMAJunkie, which was first mentioned by Ariel Helwani, Volkanovski vs. Holloway 3 has been agreed to for UFC 276 on July 2 in Las Vegas. The fight is expected to serve as the co-main event as Israel Adesanya vs. Jared Cannonier is slated as the event headliner.

UFC featherweight Max Holloway has been forced to pull out of his UFC 272 trilogy showdown with Alexander Volkanovski. ESPN is reporting that Holloway, who accepted the fight just a matter of days ago, aggravated an old injury on Thursday and will therefore be unable to compete on the March 5 card in Las Vegas. As of this writing, no official statement has been made by the UFC regarding a potential replacement or whether the fight will be rescheduled for a later date.

Many people who watched that fight felt that Holloway did enough to win it, but Volkanovski got the judges’ decision to move to 2-0 against Holloway. Since then, Holloway has beaten both Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez by decision and he seems to be the next man up for a title shot at 145lbs. However, following Holloway’s recent win over Rodriguez, he also mentioned Charles Oliveira and Conor McGregor as potential opponents, though most fans thought he would target Volkanovski specifically.

In what was an all-out war between two of the best featherweights in the sport, the fight went the full 25 minutes and both men left every bit of themselves inside of the Octagon. It was truly an incredible fight, and both men have shown an incredible amount of respect to each other following it. It was one of the best fights of the year, but at the end of the five rounds, Holloway was the winner via unanimous decision. However, it was one of those fights where the stock of both men went up. For Holloway, it could be the win that earns him another title shot at 145lbs, while for Rodriguez this performance should be enough to keep him ranked in the top-five at 145lbs. Holloway entered the fight coming off a five-round dominant decision win over Calvin Kattar where he landed 445 significant strikes. Prior to that, he suffered back-to-back decision losses to Alexander Volkanovski to lose his featherweight title. Yair Rodriguez, meanwhile, hadn’t fought since 2019 due to a USADA suspension and injures but was coming off a decision win over Jeremy Stephens.

It was an absolute war of a fight between two of the best featherweights in the world, but at the end of the 25 minutes, it was Holloway who got his hand raised by unanimous decision. Still, it was an amazing fight by both men, and despite losing the fight on his record, Rodriguez’s stock will likely go up after putting on such a great performance.

Holloway defeated Yair Rodriguez via unanimous decision in an absolute war that headlined UFC Vegas 42. It was an amazing fight from both men as they went the distance and tried to finish each other the entire time. In the end, it was Holloway who defeated Rodriguez by 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46 scorecards, and now that he has gotten by “El Pantera,” Holloway seems like he’s next in line for a big fight next time.
