Miesha Tate eyes future fight with Cris Cyborg
At UFC 198 in Curitiba, Brazil, Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg made her highly anticipated UFC debut against Leslie Smith. The fight was a short one, with Cyborg getting the TKO win over Smith in the 1st round.
Following the win, Cyborg expressed her interest in going back to Invicta to defend her featherweight championship. Despite that, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate eyes a future fight with Cyborg.
She spoke to MMAJunkie:
“I think (Justino) can make 135 pounds, but she is a very big girl,” Tate said. “She’s naturally big and I’m sure it would be a difficult cut for her. She’d have to lose muscle. She wouldn’t just be able to cut the water weight. It’d be cool to see her come down to 135 and challenge for the belt – that would be awesome.”
“I don’t know if I can not fight for the belt while I’m the champion,” Tate said with a laugh. “I’m not Conor McGregor, so I don’t know, he has his own set of rules. I wouldn’t be opposed to it. I think it would be better if we could make it a title fight. But, at some point, if that comes down and it’s allowed, then of course.
“I think it would be cool to fight ‘Cyborg’ – to see what it’s like to be in there with someone of her power. I’ll be the first to admit that, physically, I’ll be at a disadvantage. But I think I can be the one to prove that I have the heart, the durability, the determination, the will power and the technique to overcome that kind of challenge. And that intrigues me. That would be very rewarding to me.”
