2019 has been a year that has lacked some ‘Platinum’ up to this point. The generally active Mike Perry hasn’t fought yet… But it looks like that will be changing in the coming months. Set to compete at UFC Fort Lauderdale on April 27 was Brazil’s Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira who was to take on ‘The Leech’ Li Jingliang. That was until a nagging spine injury forced China’s best welterweight out of the bout.

In February of 2018 at UFC on FOX 28, fan favorite welterweight Mike Perry fought Max Griffin. Many expected Perry to beat Griffin, however, that was not the case. Griffin ended up surprising many by defeating Perry by unanimous decision in Perry’s hometown of Orlando. However, since this fight, Perry has gotten the bigger fights, not Griffin.

Mike Perry fought mere weeks ago, losing by first-round submission to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on the Denver card, but he’s already itching to get back in there. And he’s even got an opponent in mind. ”[Cerrone] was in the gym with Gracie Barra drilling in the gi, grappling all the time,” Mike Perry told ESPN recently. “He was with Mickey Gall too, let’s fight that motherf**ker. Earlier this month, in the co-main event of the UFC’s 25th anniversary show in Denver, Colorado, welterweight knockout artist “Platinum” Mike Perry stepped into the cage with long-time contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Unfortunately for Perry and his many fans, this fight didn’t go as planned. Instead, he was forced to tap to a Cowboy armbar in the first round. Heading into this fight, Mike Perry says he spent a lot of time sharpening his kickboxing arsenal with the elite coaches and training partners at JacksonWink MMA in Albuquerque. Even though he didn’t get the result he wanted against Cowboy, he says he’s happy with the striking improvements he showed in the fight.

Instead, after grounding the fight in the first frame, Perry was forced to tap out to a Cowboy armbar. While this is of course not the outcome Mike Perry was hoping for, he seems to be treating it as a learning experience. In the day since the fight, the fan favorite welterweight has been busily assessing the setback on his social media channels.

A highly anticipated welterweight fight between former teammates Donald Cerrone and Mike Perry served as the co-main event of UFC Denver. Donald Cerrone (33-11 MMA) was last seen in action at June’s UFC Fight Night event in Singapore, where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to surging welterweight contender Leon Edwards. Prior to the setback, “Cowboy” was coming off a spectacular first-round finish of Hawaiian Yancy Medeiros.

Earlier this week, we were hit by the unfortunate news that Saturday’s UFC Denver card has lost one of its best matchups: a flyweight tilt between former title challengers Ray Borg and Joseph Benavidez. Borg withdrew from the matchup with an illness. Mike Perry, who trains under the same roof as Ray Borg at JacksonWink MMA, however, isn’t buying that story. He says that the flyweight is faking his illness.

On Wednesday afternoon, ESPN reported that the UFC and Singapore’s ONE Championship are closing in on a history-making fighter trade. This potential trade would see ONE Championship send its former welterweight champion Ben Askren to the UFC, and the UFC send its former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson to the Singapore-based promotion. It did not take long for the MMA community to begin imagining matchups for both fighters in their new potential homes. Ben Askren himself, however, feels like the UFC welterweight division has gone silent since the news of his possible arrival surfaced.

On November 10, on the main card of UFC Denver, “Platinum” Mike Perry will collide with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in a welterweight matchup that has fight fans drooling. Interestingly, the pair were briefly linked to a fight back in July. At the time, Perry was booked for a UFC 226 fight with Yancy Medeiros. When Medeiros withdrew from the fight with an injury, Cowboy was briefly discussed as a replacement opponent.

Mike Perry made his prediction for the UFC 228 main event on the latest episode of BJPENN.COM Radio.

For a time, it looked as though Mike Perry and Darren Till would become arch rivals in the UFC welterweight division. After their initial trash talk and callouts, however, the pair developed a mutual respect for one another. In the buildup to UFC 227 in early August, both Mike Perry and Darren Till were in Los Angeles for the UFC’s 25th Anniversary press conference. While in Los Angeles, the two welterweights were able to get some face time in. It was during this time that Perry famously asked Till to spar. Till initially agreed, thinking that Perry had invited him to the spa, but was no less on board when he realized that Perry had actually invited him to a sparring session.

For a moment in late 2017, it looked as though Darren Till and “Platinum” Mike Perry might become mortal enemies in the perilous UFC welterweight division. Since then, however, their rivalry has blossomed into a mutual respect that borders on a bromance.  Earlier this month, while visiting Los Angeles for the UFC’s 20th Anniversary Press Conference, the two welterweights got some face-time in. Apparently, they even got a bit of sparring in — that was after Darren Till realized Mike Perry hadn’t invited him to the spa.
