“Platinum” Mike Perry Outlines His Goals for His MMA Career: “I Would Like To Be 40-0, 50-0 One Day”

Earlier this month, on the Fight Pass Prelims of UFC 204, “Platinum” Mike Perry improved to 2-0 as a UFC welterweight with a thunderous, third-round knockout of Danny Roberts. Now, it looks as though the undefeated prospect will be rewarded for this big win with a fight against long-time contender Matt Brown at UFC 207 this December

Perry’s being given this opportunity can probably be attributed to his willingness to call fighters out after his wins. After winning his UFC debut against Hyun Gyu Lim, for example, he called out two former champions in Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks – both of whom were ranked miles above him at the time.

On Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, Perry explained his willingness to call for big fights.

“I wanted to be taken seriously, I guess,” he explained. “At 202 I meant to say Tyron Woodley [too]. I said Robbie Lawler’s name twice in the video, but I meant to say Tyron Woodley as well. I mean he’s the champ, of course, I want to be the champion.”

While Perry understands the value in calling out big-name opponents, however, he also explained that he’s willing to slog it out against lesser known opponents, as this will allow him to improve his record, hone his skills, and collect more paydays.

“I also said in an interview [that I’d fight anyone in the] top-20 or top-30 because I would like to be 40-0, 50-0 one day,” he said on the show. “Let me climb my way up, get more money, more fights.”

At the end of the day, however, Perry explained that he doesn’t care who the UFC matches him up with. It’s his intention to keep knocking people out until the welterweight title is his.

“It doesn’t matter who they put in front of me,” he said. “They can put Matt Brown, they can put number 50, or number 30 or number 20, or they could put number one, Tyron Woodley, the champion, it doesn’t matter. That night will be my night, because I will train for that night to beat the opponent, and I will.”

So when does Perry expect to be fighting for the title? As early as next year, he told Helwani.

“I could be fighting for that belt next year,” he said. “[This time next year,] I’ll be fighting for the championship. Let’s see, I’ll be maybe 13-0, 14-0, fighting for the title.”

Finally, Perry explained that once he’s won the title, his intention is to live a “Platinum Lifestyle.” When asked to explain just what that is, he elaborated:

“Happiness to the highest man,” He said. “Big boats, yachts, airplanes one day maybe, chilling on cruises, eating good food. Got a beautiful woman, enjoying life to the fullest and just being happy and not being brought down by all the crazy stuff out here.”
