On This Day: Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic gets soccer kick TKO win

On this day in MMA history, legendary fighter Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic picked up an impressive 1st round TKO win 12 years ago at Pride 27.

The win for Cro Cop came by way of soccer kick, and was just Cro Cop’s 11th professional fight. It extended his professional record to 8-1-2. In addition, it put Cro Cop back in the win column after losing his Pride Conflict 2003 interim heavyweight championship fight against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the bout prior.

While the UFC recently booked an event in Croatia, Cro Cop will not be coming out of retirement for it, and is currently suspended due to a failed drug test.

Another legend of mixed martial arts has decided to hang up the gloves. On Friday, former PRIDE, UFC and Bellator heavyweight star Mirko Cro Cop announced that he’s ending his fighting career. Cro Cop explained that he is ending his fighting career because he suffered a stroke shortly after his last fight, a decision defeat of Roy Nelson, and that he can no longer withstand damage to the head.

According to Gareth A Davis of The Telegraph,  Mirko Cro Cop has been forced out his headlining showdown with Roy Nelson with a leg injury. Per The Telegraph’s report, a replacement opponent is being sought for Nelson. Given that Bellator has just days to find a suitable understudy, however, it’s hard to say how this will shake out.
