Nicco Montano dealing with "hardships" after latest fight cancelation

Former UFC flyweight champion Nicco Montano is dealing with some hardships after being forced out of her fight with Julia Avila with COVID-19. Montano was expected to fight Avila on September 5, but had to withdraw from the matchup when she tested positive for COVID-19. Unfortunately, this is far from the first fight she’s been forced to withdraw from of late, and the stresses of going so long without a payday are starting to pile up.

On July 13, UFC Sacramento goes down and it’s beginning to really shape up with four fun fight additions. The UFC revealed on Tuesday that the inaugural flyweight champion, Nicco Montano (4-2) will be making her long-awaited return for the first time since winning the title in December 2017. She would defeat Roxanne Modafferi via unanimous decision to take home the gold.

Yesterday, USADA announced that four fighters had recently accepted sixth-month suspensions for their positive testings due to ostarine usage. All of which were the result of tainted supplements. One of those fighters happened to be the inaugural UFC flyweight champion, Nicco Montano. Montano has been out of action since she won the title in December 2017 dealing with a severe foot injury. Once she was finally ready to return in September 2018 to defend her title, things still didn’t go as planned as The Ultimate Fighter 26 winner would end up hospitalized during her weight cut. Thus, obviously, canceling her fight and then leading to her being stripped of her title.

UFC 228, which went down last weekend in Dallas, Texas, was initially expected to be co-headlined by a women’s flyweight title fight between champion Nicco Montaño and challenger Valentina Shevchenko. Regrettably, Montaño was hospitalized in the midst of her weight cut, and the bout was cancelled, which ultimately resulted in Montaño being stripped of her title. Leading up to this fight, Valentina Shevchenko said on several occasions that she doubted Nicco Montaño would show up to the fight. Speaking to Luke Thomas on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Montaño shared her belief that this was wishful thinking on Shevchenko’s part. She believes the Kyrgyzstani contender was hoping the fight wouldn’t happen.
