Tyron Woodley calls out Nick Diaz for UFC 209

Back in July, ‘The Chosen One’ Tyron Woodley picked up the biggest win of his MMA career as he knocked out reigning UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in the first round of their UFC 201 main event scrap to claim the UFC welterweight championship. Following the win, Woodley sparked some controversy as he shut down welterweight #1 contender Stephen Thompson on the Fox Sports 1 post-fight show, opting to call out former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre, and MMA veteran Nick Diaz. Diaz, who was still suspended at the time of the callout, was ineligible to fight due to not paying his fine with the NSAC.

Despite the fact that Nick Diaz celebrated the end of his shortened suspension earlier this year, the eldest Diaz brother hadn’t returned to the Octagon due to the fact that he had yet to pay his fine to the NSAC. The failure to pay his fine resulted in Diaz being barred from cornering his brother Nate Diaz in his rematch with Conor McGregor back in August at UFC 202. In a recent interview, Nick Diaz explained how his presence in his brother’s corner would have made the difference as the fight with McGregor progressed:

MMA veteran Nick Diaz is no stranger to big fights inside the cage. In just his second pro fight, Diaz won the IFC United States welterweight championship by defeating Chris Lytle. Over the course of the neck 15 years, Diaz went on to win the WEC championship, as well as the Strikeforce welterweight championship. With that being said, the UFC championship belt has proved elusive for Diaz. In 2012, Diaz was given an interim welterweight title shot against Carlos Condit in the main event of UFC 143. Ultimately, Diaz lost the fight via controversial decision, with Carlos Condit being awarded the win, as well as the welterweight championship. In his next Octagon outing nearly a year later, Diaz faced welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre for the undisputed welterweight championship, losing the fight via unanimous decision.

In January of 2015, in the main event of UFC 183, former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz engaged in a memorable battle with middleweight legend Anderson Silva, ultimately coming up short on the judges’ scorecards. Unfortunately, the Stockton native has not been seen in action since. In the days following the fight, it was revealed that both Silva and Diaz had failed drug tests. Silva had failed a pre-fight test for the banned substances drostanolone, androstane, oxazepem, and temazepem, while Diaz was popped for marijuana metabolites in a post-fight test.

Nick Diaz, who recently celebrated the end of his suspension, but still finds himself suspended by the NAC due to the fact that he hasn’t paid his $100,000 fine yet, is making moves behind the scenes to set up his UFC return. After his unanimous decision loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 183, which was overturned to a no-contest after Silva failed a pair of drug tests for PEDs and Diaz failed a drug test for marijuana, Diaz was suspended for 5 years. Fortunately, the MMA community was able to rally behind Diaz, resulting in the NAC reducing the suspension to 18 months.
