Eduard Folayang vs. Manny Pacquiao in boxing? MMA legend says it “would be an honor”
Novelty matches in boxing have captured the public’s imagination, and Eduard Folayang seems more than willing to join the trend.
Lacing up a pair of boxing gloves is something that the former ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion would eagerly consider, particularly for a showdown with Manny Pacquiao.
“When you talk about a Filipino athlete, his name is immediately the first one that comes to mind. Whether it’s a Filipino or an individual from another country, Manny Pacquiao is always the topic of conversation,” Folayang told Tiebreaker Times.
“He is what we can call the gold standard of sports here in the Philippines. If given the opportunity, why would I refuse? That would be an honor.”
Pacquiao has been the most recognizable face of “the sweet science” for the better part of the last 20 years. He made history as the only pugilist to capture 13 World Titles in eight different weight classes.
“Pac-Man” officially retired from the sport in September 2021 with a Hall of Fame-worthy professional record of 62-8-2.
The legendary boxer fell short in the Philippine presidential elections in May 2022. He then chose to cash in on his superstardom by engaging in exhibition bouts.
The Filipino southpaw took on DK Yoo in his ring return. There, he outclassed the South Korean martial artist for six rounds to score a decision win.
Pacquiao steps inside the squared-circle again on July 28 at the Super Saitama Arena in Japan, facing former K-1 titleholder Rukiya Anpo in a three-round tiff.
While Pacquiao’s upcoming exhibition offers fans a nostalgic glimpse of his prime, Folayang believes there are other matchups that could captivate audiences. This includes a potential clash between himself and his prominent compatriot.
“I think it would be more interesting and intriguing, at the same time, because you have two Filipino icons in the same ring,” he said.
“At the end of the day, that’s one of the goals of combat sports — to bring people together and provide them with the best possible matchups.”
Eduard Folayang still prioritizes MMA
While Eduard Folayang recognizes the appeal of exchanging leather with Manny Pacquiao in a boxing ring, he remains focused on his MMA career.
His sights are set on returning to action later this year, eyeing participation in ONE Championship’s two-event U.S. showcase.
“My priority is still MMA. Hopefully, I can compete again, especially since ONE Championship has two events in America this year. I’m hoping to be included on either fight card,” Folayang said.
ONE Championship makes its much-awaited return to American shores with ONE 168: Denver on September 6. It takes place at the 21,000-capacity Ball Arena.
Meanwhile, the promotion enters the state of Georgia’s borders with ONE 169: Atlanta, scheduled for November 8 at the magnificent State Farm Arena.
