Joshua Pacio seeks redemption performance in rematch against Jarred Brooks
Joshua Pacio knows precisely what he needs to do to reclaim the ONE Strawweight MMA World Championship.
His road back to glory runs through a familiar opponent in Jarred Brooks. The rematch takes place at ONE 166: Qatar, emanating live from the majestic Lusail Sports Arena on Friday, March 1.
Their initial encounter in December 2022 had fans on the edge of their seats from the first bell to the last. But in the end, Brooks emerged victorious by a close unanimous decision.
Relinquishing the World Title was one thing, but for Pacio, the disappointment ran deeper. The Filipino superstar believes he didn’t showcase his absolute best in the first fight. He adopted a defensive approach and allowed Brooks to dictate the pace.
Known for his dynamic style, Pacio understands that to avenge his loss, he must return to the roots of what made him a strong force in the division.
“The goal of my training camp is to fight with no hesitation. In this rematch, I have to fight the way I really fight,” he said.
“The Passion” emphasized that unlike their first encounter, he won’t be overly concerned about his American rival’s vaunted wrestling. Instead, he plans to focus on his strengths and impose his own game plan.
“This is mixed martial arts. It’s either you will get hit or you will get taken down. Now, this camp has taught me to have the proper mindset. If I am one of the best in the world, I should fight like one,” he said.
“Yes, I’m also fighting one of the best in the world. But I shouldn’t forget that I’m also one of the best in the world.”
Joshua Pacio establishes all-around camp for world title quest
Joshua Pacio feels he is in the perfect place to prepare for the most crucial bout of his career.
In early 2023, Pacio decided to leave Team Lakay to establish Lions Nation MMA together with Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, and Honorio Banario.
The new stable has prioritized a more holistic development. Now, Pacio is reaping the benefits ahead of his rematch against Jarred Brooks.
“When you’re fighting the best, not just in my division but also in the world, I need to cover all bases. It cannot be understated because what we have here is all team effort,” he said.
“That’s the culture we have here at Lions Nation MMA.”
As Pacio gears up for his shot at redemption, everything in his arsenal is finely tuned. From technical skills to conditioning and diet, every aspect of his preparation is meticulously planned.
With Lions Nation MMA behind him, he is determined to bring the belt back home.
“You have to feel at home. That’s important for any athlete. Because if that’s the case, you’re confident and happy in your environment, it will bring out the best in an athlete,” Pacio said.
“And I can honestly say that’s what I’m feeling right now.”
