The French-Algerian Muay Thai veteran comes out of retirement to make his professional boxing debut at ONE 166: Qatar on Friday, March 1. This historic event emanates live from the magnificent Lusail Sports Arena.

On the card, he faces WBC Middle East Champion Zuhayr Al-Qahtani in a three-round, 147-pound bout.

Known primarily for his achievements in Muay Thai and kickboxing, Zatout’s decision to venture into “the sweet science” has raised eyebrows.

Many critics argue that he might be biting off more than he can chew. He is, after all, squaring off against an experienced boxer with a flawless 9-0 record. However, it stems from a deep-rooted passion for the sport.

“A lot of people close to me know that I love boxing. I’ve always trained boxing. Before when I sparred with the biggest names in Europe, I’d always focused on the boxing aspect. That’s why I’m good at boxing,” he said.

The narrative may suggest an uphill battle for “Diamond Heart. However, he is leaving no stone unturned in his preparation for the showdown.

“I’m so confident, you know. I’ve worked on my footwork and other aspects required in boxing. I consistently spar and train with high-level fighters in boxing,” he said.

“But at the end of the day, I just want to enjoy and prove that Muay Thai fighters can also use their fists and box.”

Recognizing the importance of strength and conditioning, Zatout aims to be explosive from the opening bell to the final round.

“My team and I have focused a lot on strength and conditioning. We’ve made sure my knees are strong, arms, back, and even my feet for my footwork. Normally, I train three times a week. For this camp, I train every day. Six times a week are dedicated to strength and conditioning,” he said.

“I’m working with two different coaches, one specific for the legs and one specific for the upper body. Throughout the afternoon, it’s all boxing.”

Mehdi Zatout has a point to prove against Zuhayr Al-Qahtani

Mehdi Zatout acknowledges the experience gap in boxing between him and Zuhayr Al-Qahtani.

However, he firmly believes that the Saudi Arabian pugilist has yet to face an opponent of his caliber.

“I’ve fought fighters like him before, but I don’t think he has fought someone like me. So let’s see,” Zatout said.

Fully aware of the gravity of the moment, Zatout is determined to leave a lasting impression at ONE 166: Qatar.

“I want to surprise everybody and make people crazy. I want them to see a Muay Thai fighter and kickboxer like me beat a boxer in his own game,” he said.
