Nong-O meets Kongthoranee in flyweight Muay Thai showdown at ONE Fight Night 28

By BJPENN.COM Staff - January 26, 2025

The fight announcements are coming thick and fast for ONE Fight Night 28: Prajanchai vs. Barboza next month. In line with that, a huge bantamweight Muay Thai showdown has been added to the fold.

Nong-O Gaiyanghadao

It’s a new dawn, a new day for former ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Hama. The legendary striker will make a fresh start when he moves to the flyweight division to meet #4-ranked contender Kongthoranee Sor Sommai on Friday, February 8, inside Bangkok, Thailand’s Lumpinee Stadium.

A longtime ruler of the bantamweight world, Nong-O has asserted himself as one of the all-time greats in Muay Thai. The 38-year-old held the coveted World Title for four years, defending it on six occasions.

In April 2023, he lost his crown to now-reigning ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion Jonathan Haggerty. Moreover, he has only won one of his last three bouts since.

But the Thai great is determined to deny critics and reinvent himself by entering the flyweight division to pursue a second belt in ONE Championship.

“Coming for number one,” he said on Instagram.

Kongthoranee looks to pass the biggest test of his career against Nong-O at ONE Fight Night 28

ONE Friday Fights graduate Kongthoranee Sor Sommai has taken on all comers in his ONE Championship career, which now leads him to his biggest name yet.

The surging Thai star amassed a seven-fight winning streak in the series before having it snapped by two-sport, two-weight ONE World Champion Superlek Kiatmoo9. However, he hasn’t let it define him, as he quickly returned to winning ways.

Kongthoranee outstruck Tagir Khalilov across three rounds before carving out another clinical win over the tried and tested battler in Nakrob Fairtex.

Naturally, the more fights you win the tougher the opposition becomes. Nong-O is certainly fitting of that description. And there’s no doubt the Thai great is ready to shake up the waters.

That said, a victory over the former longtime ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion would solidify Kongthoranee’s position and show the weight bracket that he’s a serious threat to the throne.
