Superlek out! Nico Carrillo to face Nabil Anane for interim world title

By BJPENN.COM Staff - January 2, 2025

January’s huge ONE 170 event has taken an early hit, but the promotion has adapted quickly to alter a high-stakes affair.

Nico Carrillo

Second-ranked bantamweight Muay Thai contender Nico Carrillo was set to collide with reigning king Superlek Kiatmoo9 for the belt. But the Thai superstar was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Now, Carrillo meets another giant in #5-ranked contender Nabil Anane for the ONE Interim Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title on Friday, January 24, at Bangkok, Thailand’s Impact Arena.

Carrillo rose to stardom in ONE Championship by knocking out all four opponents in destructive fashion. And he was eager to add Superlek’s name to his list.

His clash with Superlek for the coveted crown was met with great anticipation. However, an injury to “The Kicking Machine” has put the bout on ice for now.

In the meantime, the Scottish knockout artist will remain on the card to try and solidify his position against Anane. But this also gives the surging 20-year-old Anane a huge opportunity to leapfrog the rankings.

The 6-foot-4 striker has utilized his huge limbs to dominate the competition. More recently, Anane has built great form in victories over Kulabdam Sor Jor Piek Uthai, Felipe Lobo, and Soe Lin Oo.

Carrillo and Anane are undoubtedly two of the most prolific hitters in the division. So when the pair collide at ONE 170, fans are encouraged not to blink. After all, the weight bracket’s interim crown hangs in the balance.

Superlek to face the winner of Nico Carrillo vs. Nabil Anane at ONE 172

The winner of Nico Carrillo and Nabil Anane’s showdown at ONE 170 won’t have to wait long for their chance to reach the bantamweight summit.

Carrillo and Anane will vie for the ONE Interim Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title later this month. And while two-sport king Superlek Kiatmoo9 is sidelined, the Thai great won’t be out for long.

Superlek’s grand return will take place at ONE 172 on Sunday, March 23, in Japan’s Saitama Super Arena.

With the quick turnaround, the heavy hitters will be looking to end January’s duel quickly in order to face Superlek in the best condition possible.
