On the most recent episode of the popular MMA podcast ‘The Brutally Honest Show,’ the guys spent some time speaking with Female boxing champion Layla McCarter who first discussed her thoughts about UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey recently appearing on the cover of Ring magazine, and whether or not she was happy to see Rousey on the cover.
“Absolutely not. I think Ring Magazine is traditionally a boxing magazine, I mean I know they covered wrestling in the early days, but I mean it’s a boxing magazine and I think MMA has enough exposure; Ronda Rousey has enough magazines to grace the cover of. There’s so many deserving female fighters, boxers, that could easily be on the cover of Ring Magazine. I think it’s insulting really.”
Rousey’s boxing has evolved under the tutelage of coach Edmond Tarverdyan, to the point where she has reportedly been dropping professional boxers during sparring sessions, but Layla McCarter doesn’t buy it.
“I’d like to know what professional boxer has ever been dropped by Ronda Rousey in sparring, I’d like to know a name. Do you know who? I think that’s bologna. I don’t think that’s ever happened or ever would happen. Would I have the guts to [step in there with Ronda] any day. Any day she wanted to have a boxing lesson I’d give her one. This is what I do for a living, I’m not going to go challenge her in MMA, she’d kick my butt. She’d grab my arm and break it. So I know my limitations, and I know what I’m good at, and boxing is my sport.”
“If she’d ever like to cross over, which would be a dumb thing for her to do, but if she ever did, I would knock her out. Plain and simple.”
While McCarter stated that she has tremendous amounts of respect for Ronda Rousey in regards to her abilities in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, she can’t help but feel that Rousey’s boxing is basic.
“Her striking is basically, just like any other MMA fighter, isn’t at the level of a boxer. It’s a different sport.”
