Robert Whittaker explains why squaring off with Sean Strickland “has more perks” than fighting Khamzat Chimaev
Robert Whittaker has explained why he’s more interested in a fight against Sean Strickland than Khamzat Chimaev.
Last month, Robert Whittaker got back in the win column as he overcame a tough test in the form of Paulo Costa. Now, as you can imagine, he has his sights set on a middleweight title shot. Before he can get there, though, many believe he needs to get another win under his belt.
That’s easier said than done at the elite level, of course. In terms of who his opponent would be, the majority of fans believe Sean Strickland would, be a suitable choice.
However, Khamzat Chimaev’s name has also been thrown into the mix. In a recent interview, Whittaker gave his thoughts on who he’d rather take on.
Whittaker’s Strickland/Chimaev thoughts
“That’s tricky because that doesn’t move me. It does in clout, but it doesn’t move me higher up in the rankings,” Whittaker told MMA Junkie of a fight with Chimaev. “I don’t know. I want to fight guys in the top five. Beating Strickland puts me at (No.) 1 again, and that’s as close as you can get really.”
Bobby Knuckles proceeded to respond to Sean’s suggestion that he’s one-dimensional.
“Yeah, pretty good blitzing, you know?” Whittaker said. “And everyone knows I do it, so I’m interested to see if he can do something about it, as well. I’ll blitz him, as well.”
