Sean O'Malley returns from USADA suspension at UFC 239, takes on 'Chito'

Tom Taylor - April 26, 2019

“Sugar” Sean O’Malley is one of the most promising young prospects in the crowded UFC bantamweight division. Unfortunately, it’s been some time since we’ve seen the fan favorite in the cage, as he was recently sidelined by a four-month suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the result of his ingesting a tainted supplement containing Ostarine. The good news is that The MMA Lab representative is now set to return to the cage — on the biggest UFC card of the year thus far. According to ESPN, he will battle Marlon “Chito” Vera at UFC 239 on July 6 in the midst of the UFC’s International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

One of if not the brightest prospect to come from Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series is the bantamweight division’s ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley. Unfortunately for the 24-year old star in the making, he’s been sidelined since March with injury as well as a suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Sean O’Malley is a rising star in the UFC’s bantamweight division. Unfortunately, he’s been sidelined by a USADA suspension. He was supposed to fight on the biggest card of the year at UFC 229 but was pulled off the card when he was flagged by USADA. While this represents a definite setback for O’Malley, he’s determined to turn it into a positive.

Sean O'Malley has a message for anyone who thinks he's 'stupid enough to take a banned substance'

Tom Taylor - November 15, 2018

Red hot UFC bantamweight contender Sean O’Malley was expected to make his anticipated return to the cage opposite José Alberto Quiñónez at UFC 229 on October 6. Regrettably, the popular bantamweight was forced off this card when he failed a pre-fight drug test administered by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Although new USADA policy dictates that potential violations are to no longer be announced, O’Malley chose to be forthright with his fans and explained that it was a failed drug test that forced him off the card. He also maintained that he did not mean to ingest a banned substance, and that his failed test was likely due to a tainted supplement.

Sean O'Malley announces he's out of UFC 229 due to potential USADA violation

Thomas Taylor - September 30, 2018

Last week, the UFC announced that it has adjusted its drug testing practices, and that it will no longer be announcing potential United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) violations. Instead, the promotion plans on holding off on announcements until violations are confirmed. This means that, going forward, fighters could potentially be involved in USADA investigations without the public knowing. Red-hot UFC bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley, who was scheduled to fight José Alberto Quiñónez at UFC 229 on October 6, has found himself in this scenario. Sean O’Malley announced this unfortunate situation on his official Instagram page. Contrary to his widely-known use of marijuana, O’Malley suggests this potential violation stems from the use of a tainted supplement.

Sean O'Malley gives timeframe for Octagon return

Tom Taylor - June 7, 2018

It sounds like “Suga” Sean O’Malley could be back in our lives quite soon. O’Malley, who has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in the talent-packed bantamweight division, last fought at UFC 222, when he picked up a decision win over Andre Soukhamthath. While this win was impressive, it did come with a catch: he badly injured his foot in the third round, to the point that he was just about immobile by the time the fight ended.

Under the MMA Microscope | Is the UFC hyping the wrong fighters?

Drake Riggs - May 11, 2018

In the current UFC era, it’s been made loud and clear what the new ownership’s motives are: get rich or die tryin’. Well…maybe not to that extreme of a level but 50 Cent has been getting involved with the MMA scene lately(whatever that means) so don’t tell me that that’s not a good quote choice. Everybody loves a good hype train. Especially when it is natural, warranted and deserved. What don’t people love? A forced hype train. Thus begging the question, has the UFC been putting hype behind the wrong fighters?

Sean O'Malley explains how the UFC reacted when he pulled out a joint on live TV

Tom Taylor - April 17, 2018

The crowd at last weekend’s UFC Glendale show was full of MMA stars, as most UFC shows are. One of the famous faces in the crowd was that of red-hot UFC bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley. O’Malley, who has made no secret of his love of the devil’s lettuce, did not let his screen time go to waste, channeling Nate Diaz, and pulling out a big joint as the camera panned over him.

Andre Soukhamthath is Leaving Instagram Because UFC Fans are Awful

Justin Golightly - March 14, 2018

When Andre Soukhamthath took a one-legged Sean O’Malley down in their UFC 222 fight, he probably didn’t even think about it. He was just going off of instinct. It cost him the fight, but the punches keep coming long after that bell rang. People have been trolling the UFC fighter relentlessly since then and haven’t let up yet. He’s got so much abuse that he’s decided to take a leave of absence from social media.

Former UFC Champion Gives Major Props to Sean O'Malley

Justin Golightly - March 8, 2018

It looks like we have another potential rising star on our hands, but there are a lot of people pumping the brakes. Rightfully so though, if you look back at the group of hyped prospects that have ended up being pushed too soon or falling short in the long run. Sean O’Malley sure seems to have all the tools, especially after UFC 222, but he’s only three years into this sport. However, anyone who doubts him can turn to former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, who is here to help convince you that O’Malley will be wearing gold sooner or later. If you can’t see him w/a belt around his waist you better get your 👀 checked. There’s real🔥 behind his flash. And he’s in a room where 🗣 is cheap & it doesn’t matter who you are or what you did, you’re pushed everyday by our brothers & sisters.#YouGotTeammates #WeGotBrothers https://t.co/Sk8vIcIQJb

Andre Soukhamthath is Starting to Get Convinced by Trolls Flaming Him for UFC 222 Strategy

Justin Golightly - March 7, 2018

When Sean O’Malley’s foot was in so much pain he couldn’t stand on it at UFC 222, fans and the cornermen of Andre Soukhamthath were yelling at him to stand-up but instead he took him down. In the heat of battle, it’s hard to criticize someone, especially after the amount of punches they absorb. That didn’t stop trolls from insulting Soukhamthath though, but humble Soukhamthath thinks they aren’t entirely wrong. “I’m getting trolled right now by so many people. They are calling me the dumbest fighter in MMA. The dumbest fighter in UFC history. Even my friend Rashad [Evans]. Everyone is wondering why I decided to wrestle, and I’m wondering the same thing. After he rocked me, I still stayed in the fight but I was kind of dizzy and dazed afterwards. That shot really threw me off the rest of the game plan in the fight. I really wasn’t there. I think I was just fighting with instincts. I definitely regret it because I’m a striker first and a wrestler second.”

Nate Diaz comments on Sean O'Malley's win, O'Malley responds

Tom Taylor - March 4, 2018

Last night, on the main card of UFC 222, red-hot bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley took his latest steps into the Octagon, this time facing the dangerous Andre Soukhamthath. Despite having his leg pulverized in the final frame – at which point a Soukhamthath win looked like it was only a kick away – O’Malley ultimately came out on top, as he awarded a decision win for his performance in the first and second rounds. Unfortunately, however, O’Malley’s leg was so damaged that he couldn’t even stand for his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.
