According to current Bellator fighter and ESPN analyst Chael Sonnen, ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani has caught wind of a potential fight between reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. Since then, Miocic has been adamant that he deserves an immediate rematch with Cormier based on his previous dominance as champion.

Last night, we learned that trace amounts of turinabol had been detected in Jon Jones’ body, and that the Nevada State Athletic Commission refused to license him for his UFC 232 fight with Alexander Gustafsson as a result. The UFC then moved the entire UFC 232 card to LA, as the California State Athletic Commission agreed to license Jones on the basis that he didn’t actually fail a drug test and his other recent tests have come back negative. One of the first fighters to react to this wild turn of events, unsurprisingly, was Jon Jones’ arch rival Daniel Cormier.

A big part of the reason it doesn’t make sense for him, he says, is that his first bout with Miocic just wasn’t that lucrative. Ever since he surrendered the heavyweight title to Cormier in July, he’s been adamant that he deserves a rematch on the basis of his record-breaking three-straight title defenses.

Back in in July, in the main event of UFC 226, Stipe Miocic’s record-breaking reign as UFC heavyweight champion came to a skittering halt, as he was put down by reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. The, in the immediate fallout of this fight, we learned that Cormier’s first defense as heavyweight champion would likely pit him against former champion and WWE superstar Brock Lesnar. This turn of events has not gone over well with Stipe Miocic. Miocic, who defended the heavyweight title three consecutive times — more than any previous heavyweight champ — feels he deserves an immediate rematch with Cormier.

If all goes according to the UFC’s plan, the next crack at UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will go to former champion and WWE star Brock Lesnar. While a Cormier vs. Lesnar fight is almost certain to do big business, it’s caused a bit of a headache for the UFC’s top heavyweight contenders, such as Curtis Blaydes. Blaydes, like many members of the MMA community, feels that Lesnar doesn’t belong anywhere near a UFC heavyweight title shot. Lesnar, of course, hasn’t won a fight since 2010, when he choked out Shane Carwin. Though there was briefly a win over Mark Hunt on his record in 2016, that win was overturned when he tested positive for a banned substance.

Despite the violent and decisive outcome of this fight, there has been nothing but respect between Cormier and Miocic in the days since.

Stipe Miocic has issued a statement shortly following his shocking first-round knockout loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 226. Cormier was able to catch Miocic with a right hand late in round one which sent Stipe crashing to the canvas.
