It is too bad that Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw will not be settling their feud at UFC 213 as originally planned. Garbrandt suffered a back injury and will not be recovered in time to train for the fight by the July 8 event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Until recently, former UFC bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw was expected to challenge reigning champ and former teammate Cody Garbrandt for gold at UFC 213 this July 8. Regrettably, Garbrandt has been forced out of this planned title fight with back trouble, which has left Dillashaw without a chance to fight for gold. While the simplest option for Dillashaw would seem to be to wait for Garbrandt to recover, he’s got another plan. The talented bantamweight has recently been campaigning for a shot at Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, who rules the flyweight division 10 pounds south of bantamweight.

Yesterday, we learned that UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt was indeed out of UFC 213, which left his planned opponent TJ Dillashaw without an opponent. With this unfortunate news, an opportunistic Dillashaw re-upped on his previous claims, suggesting that he is keen to drop to flyweight to challenge dominant champ Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson for his belt. Apparently, the UFC is into this idea, and the fight is being seriously considered as the main event of UFC 215 this August in Seattle (in Johnson’s native Washington). While the world seems to be drooling over the possibility of a Dillashaw vs. Johnson flyweight title fight, however, Johnson himself is not so keen on the fight, as he feels Dillashaw would be skipping the line at flyweight. In his opinion, the streaking Ray Borg might be a more fitting opponent for his next defense.

The UFC bantamweight title fight between champion Cody Garbrandt and former champion TJ Dillashaw is in jeopardy with Garbrandt trying to get a back injury healed up. The two are slated to fight for Garbrandt’s title at UFC 213 on Saturday, July 8, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Garbrandt recently stated that he was going to Germany to have a procedure done on his injured back and the UFC and Dillashaw are awaiting to hear if the procedure has helped. Dillashaw however, is already eyeing another title fight if Garbrandt can’t compete and called out UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, which UFC President Dana White is already liking.

For the last few weeks, former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw has been operating under the assumption that he’ll be fighting reigning champ Cody Garbrandt at UFC 213 this July 8. Recently, however, news surfaced that Garbrandt is having some issues with his back, putting the pair’s UFC 213 fight in jeopardy. While this is obviously unfortunate news for Dillashaw, the former champ was quick to come up with a backup plan, suggesting that he’d be willing to drop to 125 pounds to challenge dominant champ Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson for flyweight gold.

Unfortunate news surfaced Friday afternoon that Cody Garbrandt had been dealing with a back tear, and would be heading to Germany to undergo yet another procedure in order to help his back recover in time for the fight. While UFC President Dana White is extremely confident in the procedure Garbrandt will go through in Germany, and isn’t concerned with Garbrandt potentially missing the fight, he did reveal that the backup plan for TJ Dillashaw is to fight UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.

The UFC 213 bantamweight title fight between champion Cody Garbrandt and former champion TJ Dillashaw may be on rocky roads. The two former teammates are slated to settle their differences in the Octagon at UFC 213 following their stints as coaches on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter. However, both fighters took to social media on Friday to reveal some information that could potentially push the fight back to a later date.

This July, UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will step into the Octagon against his former teammate, former bantamweight champion, TJ Dillashaw at UFC 213. Prior to the pair fighting, they have coached opposite one another on The Ultimate Fighter, where they engaged in several heated exchanges, the most noteworthy saw Garbrandt choke his former teammate. Interestingly enough, former bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz, who has fought both men, believes that Garbrandt will win the fight. During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Dominick Cruz elaborated on how Dillashaw’s style makes him a good matchup for his former teammate, but why it won’t be enough:

While former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, and UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt certainly have a very public and very longstanding feud, the pair momentarily put their beef aside recently after Garbrandt revealed via social media that he was engaged to be married. Garbrandt posted a photo with his fiancé to social media, which prompted a response from Dillashaw:

Bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt and former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw used to train together at Team Alpha Male. Now, they don’t. Instead, they seem to share a real, reciprocal disdain for one another – a disdain that will come to a head when they battle for the divisional title at UFC 213 this July. Before they battle for gold at UFC 213, Garbrandt and Dillashaw are serving as rival coaches on the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter. This platform, when paired with the power of social media, is giving them ample opportunity to take their beef to new heights.

Back in November of 2013, Team Alpha Male‘s Chris Holdsworth won season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter with a second-round rear-naked choke win over Davey Grant. In May of 2014, he scored a decision win over Chico Camus, moving to 2-0 in the Octagon and 6-0 overall, and establishing himself as one of the brightest young prospects in the UFC bantamweight division. He has not been seen in the cage since.

For a time, former WEC champ Urijah Faber and former UFC champ TJ Dillashaw trained happily together, as mentor and protege, under the roof of Sacramento, California’s Team Alpha Male. Today, however, the two fighters could not be more distant. Not long after Team Alpha Male brought striking veteran Duane Ludwig in to serve as a coach, Ludwig departed the camp, and relocated to Colorado. Having formed a close relationship with the striking coach, Dillashaw then followed him to Colarado, where he now splits his training between Team Elevation and Ludwig’s gym.

He was also the mentor of former champion TJ Dillashaw, until Dillashaw left Faber’s Sacramento camp, creating one of MMA’s most visible feuds in the process. As such, Faber’s analysis of the next UFC bantamweight title fight, which will see Garbrandt attempt to defend the title against his former training partner Dillashaw, is incredibly interesting.

When Daniel Cormier choked out Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the main event of UFC 210, it opened the door for a massive Cormier vs. Jon Jones light heavyweight grudge match sometime later this year. Given that UFC 213, which will cap off this year’s International Fight Week, is still without a main event, and that it occurs right as Jones’ PED-related suspension ends, it looks like the perfect setting for this massive light heavyweight title fight. At the UFC 210 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White was asked about the possibility of this grudge match headlining UFC 213, which is scheduled for July 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada. While the boss was noncommittal in his answer, he did confirm that the UFC 213 lineup will include a bantamweight title fight between champ Cody Garbrandt and estranged former teammate TJ Dillashaw.
