On Sunday afternoon, BJPENN.COM’s Chris Taylor reported that the UFC is targeting a pair of crucial welterweight contender bouts for the early phases of the New Year. The first, Taylor reported, is expected to pit former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler against ever-dangerous karate stylist Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The other is expected to pit recent UFC welterweight title challenger Darren Till against former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren, who recently signed with the UFC.

In the opinion of Tyron Woodley’s coach Din Thomas, Georges St-Pierre probably is still the greatest welterweight in the sport’s history, but Woodley could easily change that with a couple more wins — two wins over specific opponents, as a matter of fact.

Once he returned, it was time to remind all the doubters how skilled that he truly is. And he did just that. Of course, the champion in reference is “The Chosen One” Tyron Woodley. Despite those two title defenses that followed his draw with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in their first encounter, fans and pundits alike still didn’t seem all too sold on the reigning champion. It just further showed going into his recent defense against Darren Till as Woodley was once again the betting underdog.

Yet current champion Tyron Woodley is most definitely  closing in on that lofty title himself. In the eyes of many fans, however, it will be difficult for Tyron Woodley to cement himself as the welterweight GOAT without first defeating Georges St-Pierre. St-Pierre is, after all, still teasing a comeback.

Although Woodley actually entered the fight as an underdog, he won it decisively, dropping Till in the second round and finishing him with a choke. It was the British challenger’s first professional loss.

On Saturday night, in the main event of UFC 228, Liverpool’s Darren Till stepped into the Octagon with UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, keen to take the welterweight belt for himself. Unfortunately for Till and his legions of fans, this fight did not go the way he planned. Instead, he was dropped and submitted by the champion in the bout’s second round. Having failed to capture the UFC welterweight title — and experienced the first defeat of his professional MMA career — it’s now back to the drawing board for Darren Till. While this loss is bound to be a tough pill to swallow, however, he seems to be in reasonably good spirits, all things considered.
