Tyron Woodley questions RDA’s choice to fight Covington: he could have fought me next

Though the UFC hasn’t made it official just yet, former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos is expected to battle Colby Covington for interim welterweight gold at UFC 224 this May 12.

Speaking during a recent Instagram live video session, the division’s undisputed champ Tyron Woodley questioned dos Anjos’ choice to accept this fight. In his eyes, dos Anjos would have been wiser to hold out for a shot at the true welterweight title.

“RDA or Queefington? That’s a tough fight to say,” Woodley said (h/t MMAJunkie). “RDA, I don’t know why he’s even taking the fight. He could have fought me next. A roll of the dice. I told him I could fight in July, so if he want to fight this fight in between in May and risk getting passed up on his title shot, then that’s his bad.”

Though it seems likely Woodley that will next take on the dos Anjos vs. Covington winner, he seems reluctant to commit to fighting either man.

“I don’t even want to talk about who I want next because any time I mention a fighter, for some reason people have a different approach about it,” Woodley said. “I would rather just go out there and whoop everybody’s ass one by one. Whoever you guys and the UFC decides I’m going to fight next, that’s the person who is going to get the biz, and after that there’s not going to be nobody left.”

The champ Tyron Woodley has not fought since July of 2017, when he picked up a dominant decision over dangerous grappling ace Demian Maia. This win was preceded by a decision win over Stephen Thompson, a draw with Thompson, and a thunderous knockout of Robbie Lawler, which served as the starter pistol for his impressive welterweight title reign.
