The MMA community reacts to Amanda Nunes' close decision defeat of Valentina Shevchenko
Tom Taylor - September 10, 2017
Last night, in the main event of UFC 215 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes put her belt on the line opposite perhaps her fiercest rival: Kyrgyzstani striker Valentina Shevchenko. The fight registered as an incredibly competitive one, and after five close rounds, pretty much every onlooker was happy not to be a judge. In the end, though, the victory went to Nunes via split decision, which means the belt will remain around her waist.

We lost the main event, but the card still keeps trucking. Tonight is UFC 215 making Edmonton face the pain in Canada. Demetrious Johnson can’t break his record, but Amanda Nunes will still defend her UFC bantamweight title against Valentina Shevchenko. This is one of the best fights a promotion can make in any women’s division on Earth right now. That’s not all, Rafael dos Anjos makes his second venture at welterweight against lanky and dangerous Neil Magny. Seeing an RDA who isn’t drained anymore by a weight cut is interesting, especially against such a strong fighter. A win here definitely shows that Dos Anjos is seriously dangerous in a higher weight class, after winning his previous fight at welterweight against Tarec Saffiedine. Also a couple of cracking fights between Henry Cejudo and Wilson Reis, as well as Gilbert Melendez’s featherweight debut against “Who the Fook is Dat Guy” Jeremy Stephens.

Johnson will enter this fight on an incredible 12-fight streak, having most recently defended his title by tapping BJJ blackbelt Wilson Reis. Borg, meanwhile, is on a solid, two-fight streak over dangerous foes in Louis Smolka and Jussier “Formiga” Da Silva.

The Octagon will return to the Canadian province of Alberta on September 9th, this time in the city of Edmonton for UFC 215. The pay-per-view fight card is headlined by a flyweight title fight featuring long time division champion Demetrious Johnson squaring off with perennial division contender Ray Borg. This is it, folks. This is one of the reasons he declined a fight with T.J. Dillashaw. “Mighty Mouse” will attempt to make UFC history at the event by breaking the record for the most successful title defenses by a UFC champion with 11, beating out Anderson Silva. Johnson was last seen in action at April’s UFC on FOX event, where he scored a third-round submission victory over Wilson Reis. As for the “Tazmexican Devil”, Ray Borg has strung together back-to-back decision victories over Jussier Formiga and Louis Smolka. Two title fights headline #UFC215 in Edmonton…
