UFC 215 main event featuring Demetrious Johnson vs. Ray Borg canceled
The UFC 215 main event featuring Demetrious Johnson and Ray Borg has been canceled just days before the event is set to take place in Edmonton, Canada.
Late Thursday, Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting reported that Borg was forced out of the UFC flyweight title fight against Johnson due to illness. According to the report, Borg was fighting the illness this week and doctors deemed the UFC title challenger unfit to compete.
With the cancellation of the UFC flyweight title fight, Johnson will have to wait a bit longer to have his chance at making history by surpassing Anderson Silva’s record for most consecutive title defenses. Both Johnson and Silva are tied for most consecutive successful title defenses in UFC history at 10 a piece.
The UFC women’s bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko will now be bumped up to the main event. Interestingly, Nunes pulled out of the scheduled UFC 213 main event on July 8, the day the fight was scheduled to take place. Nunes pulled out of UFC 213 after feeling too ill to compete. Nunes will once again get the chance to star in a main event title fight on Saturday night at UFC 215.
