Al Iaquinta breaks down Cerrone vs. Ferguson and Khabib vs. Poirier
Former UFC lightweight title challenger Al Iaquinta recently shared his thoughts on the crowded 155-pound division.
‘Raging Al’, who is coming off a loss to Donald Cerrone in his most recent effort, sat down with Helen Yee where he discussed UFC 238’s Cerrone vs. Ferguson bout.
Ferguson had defeated ‘Cowboy’ via second round TKO but it was not without controversy. A late punch from Tony, combined with Donald blowing his nose, caused Cerrone’s eye to swell shut which spelled an end to the fight.
Despite the controversy, Al Iaquinta thought the fight itself was great and believed it was heading the way of Ferguson regardless.
“Great fight. It was really a great fight. Cerrone looked like he way having his way the first round. Then after that, Ferguson looked like he came out of nowhere and started pulling all of the momentum his way. It looked like it was going Ferguson’s way and then that unfortunate strike, and (Cerrone) blowing his nose and his eye blowing up, and then they call the fight. So it was a little unfortunate as far as that goes but I think the trajectory was going that way (for Ferguson).”
Al Iaquinta also shared his thoughts on the upcoming lightweight title unification bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 this September.
“Yea it’s going to be a good fight. We’ll see what happens. I think that Dustin, he’s got the skills to do it. We will see if he can. I think that if Khabib can get they takedown, it’s going to be problems. But he trains with good wrestlers, Dustin does, and he’s been around forever. He’s a veteran. So we will see. He’s a southpaw. A little different. He’s got his own skills so we will see how it all plays out.”
