BREAKING | Kamaru Usman says welterweight title fight is ‘a done deal’

By Thomas Taylor - January 2, 2019

From the sounds of it, Kamaru Usman will get the next crack at UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

Kamaru Usman, UFC 251

Speaking on Twitter on Thursday evening, the surging UFC welterweight contender announced that his next fight is “a done deal” — and it sure seems like he’s talking about a title fight.

“It’s a done deal and has been signed,” Kamaru Usman wrote. “March 2019 I will be the New WW Champion.”

This claim from Usman certainly makes some sense. UFC President Dana White has recently claimed that Usman will fight for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 235 on March 2 in Las Vegas — whether it’s against the reigning champion Woodley or not.

“That fight is happening or Usman vs. someone for the title,” White told MMAjunkie via text message recently.

As of now, it’s not clear whether Usman’s potential title shot will come against Tyron Woodley, or perhaps against somebody else, if Woodley isn’t available.

That being said Woodley is healthy, and his only objection to fighting Kamaru Usman has been that he wants to fight his arch rival Colby Covington first.

“I want to whoop Colby’s ass to be honest,” Woodley stated on The Hollywood Beatdown. “Because they done built this dude up. They allow [Colby] to annoy the universe with his terrible sh*t. He’s garbage. I think it is just way more to sell this fight, and the [UFC] is not going to allow me to fight a guy like [Conor] McGregor, or let me go up a weight class. I’ve never been allowed to go up a weight class to fight for a title. I have asked to do it a million times. [Michael] Bisping, then they let GSP [Georges St-Pierre] come in and fight him.”

“So if those fights aren’t on the table, I’m gonna end up fighting [Kamaru] Usman anyways, so let me fight Colby first! Let me get this bag right quick, and let me whoop his ass!”

If Kamaru Usman is indeed fighting Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 on March 2, who do you think will leave Las Vegas with the welterweight title wrapped round there waist? Join the debate in the comments section below.
