Dana White shares plan for Tony Ferguson, ‘Cowboy’ after UFC 238

By Tom Taylor - June 9, 2019

At UFC 238, fan favorite lightweight contenders Tony Ferguson and Donald Cerrone met in an incredibly compelling matchup that looked like it would produce the next opponent for the winner of the upcoming UFC 242 lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier.

In the end, Ferguson won this fight by TKO when the doctor deemed Cowboy unfit to continue between the second and third rounds. The issue was Cowboy’s right eye, which swelled up like a balloon after he blew his nose.

While this was an impressive win for Tony Ferguson, the doctor stoppage left the bout feeling somewhat inconclusive and anticlimactic. For that reason, UFC President Dana White is apparently thinking about booking Ferguson and Cowboy for an immediate rematch.

That’s according to UFC commentator Joe Rogan, who spilled the beans on the UFC 238 broadcast.

“Joe Rogan says on the #UFC238 broadcast that Dana White told him he’s looking to set up a Tony Ferguson vs. Donald Cerrone rematch.” – Mike Bohn on Twitter

Despite the fact that Ferguson has undeniably earned a lightweight title shot, it doesn’t sound like White will have a difficult time coaxing the streaking contender into a Cowboy rematch.

In his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, the fighter claimed that he was willing to rematch Cowboy in order to provide a more conclusive end.

“We can throw it back,” Ferguson said.

Anticlimactic or not, Tony Ferguson is now on a jaw-dropping 12-fight win-streak. Highlights of this streak include wins over Cowboy, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, Rafael dos Anjos, and Edson Barboza.

Do you think the UFC should book a rematch between Ferguson and Cowboy?
