Deiveson Figueiredo to fight Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 240

According to Combate, Brazilian flyweight fighters Deiveson Figueiredo and Alexandre Pantoja will reportedly be fighting at UFC 240 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on July 27.

Figueiredo made his UFC debut with an undefeated professional record in 2017. He managed to maintain that winning streak until his most recent fight; a decision loss to Jussier Formiga. Prior to that loss, he defeated Marco Antonio Beltran, Jarred Brooks, Joseph Morales, and John Moraga in the Octagon. He’s now 15-1 as a professional.

His future opponent, Alexandre Pantoja is a rising star in the flyweight division. The former TUF contestant is coming off a three-fight winning streak composed of wins over Wilson Reis, Ulka Sasaki and Brandon Moreno. His last loss occurred in early 2018 when he came up short to Dustin Ortiz. He’s currently 21-3-0 overall.

The winner of this newly announced flyweight bout could be considered the top contender in the division. Unfortunately, the division’s future is as hazy as ever. Reigning champion Henry Cejudo has moved up to bantamweight to challenge Marlon Moraes for the vacant title, and rumors that the flyweight division is on its last legs continue to swirl.

UFC 240 will be topped by a featherweight showdown between reigning champion Max Holloway and challenger Frankie Edgar. Holloway will use this bout as an opportunity to rebound from a lightweight loss to Dustin Poirier, while Edgar will look to build on the momentum of a 2018 win over Cub Swanson. The winner of this fight can likely look forward to a matchup with Alex Volkanovski, perhaps in Australia in the fall.
