Derrick Lewis clarifies who he will fight next after defeating Junior dos Santos
Derrick Lewis will square off with former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in the headliner of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 146 event in Wichita, Kansas.
Lewis returns to action for the first time since November’s UFC 230 event in New York, where he suffered a submission loss to Daniel Cormier in his bid for the UFC heavyweight title.
Despite falling victim to “DC” in his latest octagon appearance, “The Black Beast” is confident that he will be able to dispose of Junior dos Santos tonight in Wichita.
In fact, Lewis went as far as to look past the former UFC heavyweight kingpin during a recent interview with TMZ Sports.
“Yea, I would like to fight Stipe (Miocic) next. After this one.” Lewis stated. “Yes Stipe is the next guy. The UFC tried to give me Stipe in January, but I told them I am just coming off the ‘DC’ fight. It was two weeks after the ‘DC’ fight that they tried to offer me Stipe. You know, I told them no. I’m not about to fight Stipe on short-notice, and my hand was still messed up. So, I just told them no. Then they came back at me with umm, to fight Cain (Velasquez). And I told them ‘Nah I can’t fight Cain’. I still needed some time off. Then I told them that we needed to renegotiate my contract.”
Like Lewis, Stipe Miocic (18-3 MMA) is coming off a loss to Daniel Cormier in his most recent outing at UFC 226.
That night in Las Vegas, Cormier knocked out Miocic in the very first-round to become the second “champ champ” in promotional history.
