Fighters react to Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier interim lightweight title fight at UFC 236

By Chris Taylor - February 23, 2019

Last night it was announced that Max Holloway would be moving up to 155-pounds for an interim lightweight title fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 236.

The news came as a bit of a shock, as early this week it had been reported that an interim lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Max Holloway was “being worked on” by the promotion.

Ultimately, it was revealed by UFC President Dana White that Tony Ferguson had turned down the promotions offer to fight “Blessed” on April 13 in Atlanta.

With that, the promotion moved forward by booking a rematch between Poirier and Holloway.

“The Diamond” and “Blessed” first met at featherweight in 2012, with Dustin Poirier emerging victorious by way of submission.

Following a decision setback to Conor McGregor, Max Holloway has since put together an uber impressive thirteen-fight win streak, capturing the promotions featherweight title in the process.

In his most recent effort at UFC 231, Max Holloway defeated Brian Ortega via TKO.

Meanwhile, Dustin Poirier was most recently seen in action at July’s UFC on FOX event in Calgary, where he defeated for 155-pound kingpin Eddie Alvarez via TKO.
