Ilia Topuria explains why he drinks “half a litre of wine” the night before UFC weigh-ins
UFC star Ilia Topuria has explained why he drinks wine the night before a UFC weigh-in event.
For the longest time now, Ilia Topuria has been seen as a real threat in the UFC’s featherweight division. On Saturday night, he’ll get the chance to finally reach the top of the mountain.
Topuria will be locking horns with reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski. He hopes, of course, to go in there and put on an absolute masterclass.

If he’s able to do so, he has to be in the best condition imaginable. In Ilia’s case, one of the ways in which he does that is through the help of some wine. Yes, you heard that right.
Topuria’s wine weigh cut technique
“So the thing is that when I drink half a litre of wine, and you know that on Thursday it’s a very hard night for every fighter because it’s a day before the weigh-ins,” Topuria explained. “So it’s hard to sleep, it’s hard to rest, but I drink half a litre of wine… I get very buzzed, very buzzed and I have very- such a great time with everyone.
“It’s like we change the atmosphere, you know? We don’t think about the fighting, we just celebrate, and I go to sleep like a baby. I wake up at the next morning with two pounds less, because of the dehydration, so everything plays out really well for me.”
