Jacare Souza targets rematch with Kelvin Gastelum for next fight

By Drake Riggs - May 16, 2019

Surprisingly, legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master and former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza has alternated between wins and losses in his last five outings.

Kelvin-Gastelum-Jacare-Souza

Jacare, 39, had his last fight come in the main event of UFC Fort Lauderdale in late April opposite the rising Swedish ‘Joker,’ Jack Hermansson. Unfortunately for the 185-pound staple in Jacare, his replacement opponent would get the better of him with a unanimous decision victory.

Prior to his last win that came over former UFC middleweight king, Chris Weidman, the Vila Velha native had suffered a close split decision defeat in a back and forth battle. That loss came to the recent title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum in their UFC 224 clash in May 2018, in Jacare’s native country of Brazil.

Since then, Gastelum has been scheduled to face off with the undisputed champion of the division, Robert Whittaker following their stints as coaches on season 28 of The Ultimate Fighter. However, a very late serious injury to Whittaker would force him out of their UFC 234 clash in February. Thus leading to Gastelum fighting for an interim crown against a rising star in Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya.

The two would meet at UFC 236 in one of the greatest fights of all time as they battered each other over the course of five rounds. In the end, it would be Adesanya whose hand was raised and was getting the gold wrapped around his waist.

With both Gastelum and Jacare now on the comeback trails, the former believes it’s the perfect time for a rematch.

“I’d like to have a rematch with @kgastelum . I’ve already asked @ufc matchmaker, @mick . I hope both UFC and Gastelun accept my request. OUTRO POST EM PORTUGUÊS” Jacare Souza said in a post on Instagram.

Is this the fight to make at middleweight?
