Jack Hermansson walks back Chris Weidman callout: ‘He’s not my first choice’

By Tom Taylor - May 7, 2019

Shortly after Jack Hermansson sprung the upset on Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the short-notice main event of UFC Fort Lauderdale, he set his sights on matchups with Yoel Romero, Kelvin Gastelum and Chris Weidman.

“We want the big boys,” Hermansson said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “I have three names in mind, Yoel Romero, Kelvin Gastelum and Chris Weidman, Those make sense for me.”

After catching wind of Hermansson’s callout, Weidman took to Twitter to confirm his interest in the bout.

“I Just heard “The Joker” Hermansson mention on @arielhelwani show he would want to fight me next. Would love that fight.” – Chris Weidman on Twitter.

Unfortunately for Weidman, Hermansson is now leaning in the direction of Romero or Gastelum for his next fight, as he’s actually passed Weidman in the UFC middleweight rankings.

“He’s one [ranking spot] behind me so it would’ve felt better if it was Gastelum or Romero who was accepting the fight,” Hermansson told the Eurobash podcast (transcript via MMA Fighting).

“With Weidman, I’m a little bit picky now, he’s not my first choice. I would love to fight Kelvin Gastelum or Yoel Romero. Yoel Romero was supposed to have that fight with Paulo Costa, so I think those two will fight. I think Gastelum, he just fought, so he probably wants a break just like I do. I think we could both agree to a fight this fall, that would be perfect.”
